Buying a Civic lx

Depends on your definition of fun, I'm going to be moving up from an Accord
If economy (both value, insurance, and gas mileage) are important to you, than an LX with some basic mods like the HFP suspension and some nice wheels and tires will make for a good car. You can still have fun with it, and it will be enjoyable as a DD.
If you're looking for something sporty and just want to save the 4 grand price difference over the Si and maybe put it back into the car in mods or something, then just save up the extra 4 grand and get the Si.
If I wanted a sporty car, i'd be getting a Cooper S, Si, or Mazdaspeed3. I wouldn't count the base Civic among them unless I was planning to save money and put a lot of miles on it.

Well if your definition of a fun car includes sloppy, comfortable handling and a relatively slow car in relation to most cars on the road, then yes, the LX can be a fun car

You'll be happy with the gas mileage, but bored with the performance. Does that about sum it up for you?

i've got an '08 LX.
came from a northstar cadillac.
needless to say, the performance isn't its main selling point.
the reliability, the new styling, and the low price for the best quality on the road is why i bought it. i put some tints on it, put a tip on the exhaust, and installed sirius.
its awesome. and i plan to drive it for a couple hundred thousand miles. :-)

haha. i would have kept the caddy. regardless of the oil and coolant leaks.
actually i wouldn't mind driving any of the r18 based sedans. i could use something a little less bone jarring and more laid back.

headgaskets that blow at 80,000mi (and cost $4500 to fix, awesome engine design), electronic struts that cost $500 a piece, eats oil, radiators that are almost all plastic, and it leaves you without a car because you're constantly at the dealership as no one else wants to work on a northstar
the performance for a car that heavy is great. everything aside from that completely ******* sucks.
those cars are complete **** after 50,000 miles. i learned this the hardway. $6000 in repairs in 6 months. on a car that only had 68,000 miles when i bought it. should have cut my losses wayyyy sooner.
a civic is like having freedom.

I have an EX which I love. I can't run with an SI obviously but it's plenty of power for me to have fun with. Many say it has a sloppy suspension, however, unless you're doing anything aggressive (which shouldnt be done on public roads anyways) it's fine. My only issue with the EX is its the only way to get 4 disc but you have to have the sunroof. I hate the extra weight but love my brakes. Coming from a 94 pickup, i love it.
If you have the money for insurance, gas, and $3000 higher MSRP, buy an Si. It is well worth it, and this is coming from someone who has an LX right now. If you are trying to conserve money and gas, get an DX/LX/EX depending on what options you want.
Everyone always posts these kinds of threads... it all depends on what you want in a car, not what anyone else says.

yeah except you can't
ie. ckp sensors that fail after 20,000 miles. the car will die randomly and leave you stranded.
while overheating for 500 different reasons, the car will boil all the coolant away.
failed electronic struts will drop the car into the ground
etc. etc.

I've had my EX for a bit over a year and I can't complain. Sure sometimes I wished I had an Si but mainly when I go to the track, otherwise it doesn't matter. It all depends on what you want to do with it. If it's for everyday driving only, any model should suit you well, just pick the one with the options you'd like

Do you like your HFP suspension on the EX?
What's the drop look like and how does it ride? Too much harsher than stock or just fine?

to be honest I've never tried it stock, I bought the suspension as an option when I got the car. As far as looks, anyone could tell you, it's not that much different. (it's an inch lower or so I think ?) My only complaint came last week with all the snow here and the lousy work by the city, but eh, I doubt a stock suspension would've cleared anyway.
It rides pretty nice to be honest, sure it feels a bit stiff, not something I'd recommend for our magnificent roads (totally sarcastic there) but it does feel really nice on turns. For the little track use I give it, I can't complain.
