which tranny would be best
I have a d16y8 that I'm gonna put in my 1991 hatchback. What cable transmission would be best to use with it? The only one I could think of would be the 4th generation SI transmission or the transmission that came with the Y8. Let me know guys, thanks.
it really depends on what your using the car for. If your tracking it, you would want a shorter geared transmissiom, if it's your daily, you want better gas mleage so crusing at 3500 while going 60 isn't ideal.
Then again, it has been my experience that, when it comes to fuel economy, Honda engines don't benefit NEARLY as much as you might think from taller gearing. I tried swapping an HF transmission into my brother's 1989 DX HB wih the hopes of getting better mileage. But it seems like all this has done is turn the car into a total dog that doesn't really get noticeably better gas mileage. So I say go with the SI tranmission. Why go tall with the gearing if it is going to ruin the performance of your swap, and maybe get you 1-2MPG improvement (at best) over an SI transmission?

If you have an HF tranny you can find, used the fifth gear from it and install in your si tranny. You get 4 gears that are exactly like an Si, but a fifth gear that will act like a DX. Both si and dx have the same fifth gear just different final drives IIRC. The hf tho is much taller of a gear.

I agree with this. I put an A6 in my civic and used a DX tranny and expected to get better MPG in the A6/dx tranny civic than I do in my a6/si tranny crx but I actually get about 5mpg better in the crx.

I should also note that when I did the HF transmission swap, I was replacing an SI transmission in the DX HB - NOT a DX transmission. So you would think that this would have REALLY helped with mileage. But it didn't.

I got 650km for 45 liters with an Si tranny. I got the same with a dx tranny. I guess it's all in how you drive it.

Perhaps you also have to realize that you can't expect a Honda engine to respond the same way to gearing changes as a low-revving American V8 does. And most tidbits of automotive knowledge (ie shorter gearing = MUCH worse gas mileage) come from the first-hand experiences of old-school gearheads.
