Default removing ac belt only on a 96

while changing the axle the other day, i noticed the ac belt was cracking and looked like it would snap at any time.

the ac compressor is toast already, makes a loud rattling noise when ac is on. id rather cut it then have it snap and possibly taking another belt with it. is removing the ac compressor belt only and leaving everything else as is safe?

edit: dont really want to get another ac belt as the compressor is dead and not working anyways.

2nd edit: 96 rs 2 door if that helps

it won't hurt anything as the compressor is what turns the belt so no belt no prob... just make sure your tensioner is on tight so you dont lose it.
