Default 90' Civic Si HEATING and STARTING problems

I recently bought my first car back from my sister.
The car sat for 3yrs atleast....

1st issued:
- The battery light came on while the car was running.. to check if the alternator was working I started the car and disconnected the battery, the car stayed on, I gas a little-bit and it died. I connected the battery back and tryed to start and now I wont..... What can be the issued?

2nd issued: (It was happening when the car was running)
- The car would overheat, I changed the thermostat and It stopped but the next day it did it again. When I would start the car the radiator fluid would bubble up and flush into the reservoir. The car overheats at different speeds, the exhaust is Smokey white and has a different smell than regular exhaust. What can it be?
I talked to a guy and he said it sounds like a blown head gasket....

Help me out guys...

lol, check your main fuse... if the internal regulator in the alternator is pooched, if might have gave your car 19 some volts. Btw, disconnecting the battery when the car is running is not the proper way to test an alternator..

Not trying to be a jerk here but what is the 'correct way' to test it? Care to enlighten us? I've been using the poor boy method a while and it seems to work fine. Lol
