Default Todays Tech Tip... and Fram Oil Filters

This is the 2nd time its happened to me...

Doing an oil change.. go to start it up... no oil pressure, and a lot of oil under the car?

Take off the oil filter I just installed, and find the O ring from the old Fram filter still hanging out on the block!

This time I'm pissed off at Fram not myself. But Ill never install another oil filter without visually inspecting the mating surface.

Oh and Ill never buy a Fram oil filter again. Sucks being cheap. Had to buy my oil twice! lol

Fram =
Me =
You = if you dont buy Fram.

You should buy oem honda filters anyway, just a little more expensive. While your at replace crush washer on plug every time.

I've never had this happen with a fram.

For some reason people love to hate them but i've never had a problem and quite often I use them.

I used to use Fram all the time and i never had a problem. A while back i had a motor that was on its last leg...so i decided to drive it until it popped. I went over 7k miles without and oil change, and when it finally let go i took the filter off and inspected it. I cut it in half on the bandsaw and the thing looked like Honda filters do after 3k miles. Im not saying that Fram is better than OEM Honda, but they arent as shitty as most people make them out to be. I now run Honda filters and they work exactly how they were meant to.

BTW-You should always check to see if the gasket from the old filter stuck on the block. It doesnt happen very often, but it happens none the less. It doesnt discrimate either, it can happen no matter what filter youre using.

I changed oil for about 2 years at hell I mean Wal Mart and thank god I always checked. I would have 1 just about every day stick. But you should always check cause you never know. lol we'd also would get one every now and then that didn't have a gasket but that was rare.

the times the o ring stuck to the block had you lubed the o-ring before install? I dip my finger in oil then lube the o-ring before putting it on every time, pretty common practice. The slipery surface makes it so you can hand tighten them with ease, creates a better seal (think wet suction cup vs. dry) and easier to remove later. Fram just sounds cheap, but I'm pretty sure your not going to see a quality difference in o-ring sticking from brand to brand. I think thats one aspect thats gonna be the same wether you go purolator, fram, honda, spoon, whateva. Just an fyi, Honda filters used to be bar none cause they were bigger and contained twice as much element as competition, but about 4 years ago they went cheap to smaller filters same size as competitor knock offs. But s2000 filter is still the larger better filter through honda and it works on all b-series engines, not sure about D's though. I know this topic has been covered before, probly in better detail just thought I'd mention it.

Listen up people. Im so sick of this that I have to type in bold.

Honda filters are made by honeywell now. NOT FILTECH.

Honeywell is the same company who makes...............you guessed it.............

FRAM>

Stick that in a pipe and smoke it.

The best filters on the market .... BAR NONE..... are NAPA Gold filters or WIX.

******* PERIOD.

Anyone who says different doesn't know ****.

But the K&N and Mobile 1 filters cost like twice what a Wix filter costs.

Oil filter? I thought the turbo did this function when you used a sandwich adapter...

So I'm guessing that Fram uses the cheap rubber and cheap glue vs other companies? The only thing you should be looking at is the filtration quality and the internal bypass. I'd rather run my motor with clean oil than only care about making sure the o-ring doesn't need inspection.

Are you the kind of guy who makes a "Boycott Tropicana!" when you accidentially grab the pulpy OJ instead of the non-pulpy?

Wix or Napa Gold.

No need to buy the expensive K&N or Mobil1 filters.

I run REDLINE in my race bikes that spend hours on the rev limiter, also in my car with no problems. My dad is in the process of becoming an AMSOIL dealer and we still will use redline at retail. I use a Napa Gold oil filter made by WIX, but mobil 1 is my other choice.

REDLINE

Bingo.

While Fram filters have very questionable quality and I refuse to use them, it's still the responsibility of the person doing the work to check for a gasket stuck to the block, because it occurs all the time. I've had various filters (including OEM Honda, Mobil, NAPA, Toyo Roki, etc.) leave the gasket stuck to the block on removal - the brand doesn't matter. You have to check. I always glance at the filter when I remove it, and I always wipe off the seat on the block - so I have two opportunities to catch a stuck gasket.
