first of all the car is a 89 hatch with a jdm first gen B16
i have a check engine code 2 witch is the secondary o2 sensor... I think.

problem.... on the way to work this morning rpms drop then a back fire and no power.

after a couple attempts the engine starts but runs like ****.

could the o2 sensor be the culprit?

Yes, a bad/not working O2 will make the car run poorly.

 

just all of a sudden though?
i have a occasional check engine light but it never affected the engine.
then all of a sudden bam.. it wont run.

would i get a check engine light if the distributor was no good

 

NO AN O2 WILL NOT MAKE IT DIE OR NOT RUN, IT WILL RUN RICH BUT STILL VERY DRIVEABLE, CHECK UR DIZZY, AND MAKE SURE UR ROTOR IN THE DIZZY DIDNT COME OFF, THE SCREW IN THOSE COME OFF SOMETIMES AND THE ROTOR WILL WOBBLE OF AND CAUSE THE CAR TO BACKFIRE AND DIE

I agree it will run like crap but not backfire....check your dizzy. It could be your ignitor or coil

you hit the nail on the head...

the screw came out of the rotor. i relpaced the screw and the engine purred like a kitten.
