Default Stripped hole

On my 96 Accord EX I went to put rotors and pads on the rear of it today and when I got to the top bolt putting the bracket on that holds the rotors on or goes around them I guess doesn't actually hold them on I noticed the top bolt never got tight. It seems to hole is stripped. It screws in some but not all the way to tight. I've never had good luck with tapping stuff but I guess I'm going to have to here. Do you guys know what size tap I should get? Any tips for re tapping it? Thanks.

Buy a meteric helicoil kit.Take the other bolt to the parts store and find out what size it is.If the hole is stripped tapping it will not help.Going to a bigger size might work if what the bolt goes through the hole is big enough.Helicoils will keep it at the original size and be just as strong.

there is a couple plug type of kits out there for this (helicoil like mentioned above and a couple others) but in this case I would probably just drill it over and tap for a larger size. Not sure how one of those plugs would hold up in a higher torque situation, I've only used them in low torque areas. Just find out the size of the stripped hole, then find out what tap requires a drill that's just a bit larger so you can clean it up but not be taking out more material than needed. You'll probably also have to drill out the hole that the bolt goes through but that shouldn't be any problem. If you go SAE then get a grade 8 bolt, if you go metric get a 10.8 grade bolt I believe.

Helicoils work very well in high torque situations.I have used them in many applications where a impact gun was used to torque the bolts and no pull out. They are made of stainless steel and are just as strong as the original .Mark
