10,000 max
if he doesn't want to drop then look elsewhere
what does http://www.edmunds.com value the car at? use it as a baseline compared to the actual car itself

Okay, if you've got 11,500 then you can hold out for a car with lower mileage and a clear title for 12-14k. They are all over the trader. Resale value is higher and you'll have less headaches. The worst thing you can do is get in a hurry and then end up buying a P.O.S. You'll end up spending the cash to fix it and when you look at the total spent, you'll realize that you could've bought a newer, better S. (Quoted by me from a different but similar thread.)

Something to also keep in mind about high mileage engines.....Metalurgy has seen big advances in the last 20 years and things last longer wear less and also can endure more abuse. Theres a good chance that a vehicle with that many miles (150k) was mostly done on the highway at 3-4k rpms. Most of todays engines can easily go 300k+ properly mantained and not abused too much.
If you going to buy a high mileage vehicle be more concerned with who owned it vs the mileage on the engine. Younger owners tend to be a lot harder on vehicles vs older more mature people. also women generally dont drive cars too hard.

Cost vs. mileage, dude. Even if it is going to last for a long time...why over pay for it? That's the issue here. Example: Would you pay $6k for a stock 93 civic with 150k on it?
11k+ is too much for a 150k mile 00 S2000.
You could get one with lower mileage for only slightly more. The price for AP1s....especially early AP1s has dropped RIDICULOUSLY.
There's an 02 on ebay with a hard top for $16k right now. I think it has like 50k miles.
