Input shaft in and out on 90 CRX si tranny?

Have a friend with a 90 CRX si trans. The input shaft goes in and out some. I know up and down is generally an input shaft bearing, but what does it mean when it goes in and out?

end play on mainshaft should be between 0.0043" and 0.0071" - if out of spec, it needs different shims
