Viper 5900 and manual trans remote start
I had the 5900 installed into my civic hatch by a shop and i asked them not to install the remote start feature. I got a good deal on the alarm and install package so i let them install it. i still am, however, planning to do my own stealth install and relocate everything. i was planning out my stealth install and i wondered about the remote start.
i was wondering if there was anyway by using relays to have a specific sequence for the remote start to work. my idea was to use the turbo timer feature of the alarm so that the car will stay running and out of gear, so that when i go to remote start the car ill know that the car is not in gear at all. if the sequence is not followed, then the remote start feature will be disabled.
in a nutshell:
is there ways i can use relays so that my remote start will only work if i previously use the turbo timer feature.
if turbo timer is not used previously, then remote start will not function.
you guys can flame all you want! haha but i asked a technical question here and am looking for technical answers. thanks in advance for your help!

I do not recommend the DEI unit on principal.
I see it as a cash grab by DEI, there is no reason they could not build in "standard transmission capability" into there remote starts.
But then again, I guess that now that Autostart is a DEI product, they do have a line of remote starts for standard transmission cars, all Autostart remote starts, alarm/remote start combo units, 1way and 2way are standard transmission compatible, the same goes for Astroflex.
So I guess I have to limit my disappointment to the "original" lines, Viper, Clifford, Avital and so on.

Well, to be fair, the older cliffords, and some of the newer ones too, use the Intellistart 4 module which works with a standard transmission. So you can't be entirely disappointed with them

Maybe they will. But you have to remember on our side of the fence were kinda "sue happy". DEI already crossed that bridge with the b platform cars (mechanical safety switch) years ago. Add to that the many installers and enthusists who for years rigged ways to make it work (many with disasterous results)- I can see the hesitation. But why pay to license someone's technology when you can own it
- its the way of biz. It sucked when I sent a Solaris in and got a 790xv back only because I lived in the states.
Hows the old saying go: "The money is in the medicine, not the cure"
PS the module # is 689M

Is remote start on a manual transmission car a good idea, even with a unit specifically designed for it?
I'm looking at possibly buying a Prelude that has remote start and it's a manual transmission vehicle.
Is there anything I should look for to ensure I don't buy a car that has a botched install of a remote start in a manual transmission car without the module to ensure that it's done safely?
So, the Viper 5900 has a module for this? Are there any other devices for this?
It makes me nervous to think some moron might have installed a remote start in a manual transmission car without using one that is supposed to work with a manual tranny.
The car is pretty riced out as it is, so there's no telling what he's done to it. I've only seen it on Craig's list and I sent the guy an e-mail with a huge list of questions.
I'm hoping to save it... it's got 4WS. Might sell the Integra to get it. I love Preludes, but I can't let that cloud my judgement.
wrx-killer-Sti-eater, I seek your sage advice and tutelage.

DEI makes a module that will work with the 5900, [and their other auto only R/S]
The only other one I know about is the... http://peripheralelectronics.c...t*ard
You can ask the seller if he has the module, or will the car remote start in gear?
You can also just add the module if it does not have it.
With all the choices of remote starts/alarm remote start combo units for standard transmissions available, it still blows my mind that people still install remote starts for automatic transmissions only in cars with standard transmissions.

Well, I'm not sure if it's a 5900, that's just the model that was mentioned earlier in this post. I wasn't sure if there were other models that could do it safely.
Anyway, it's a moot point since the seller didn't answer any of my questions, just said I should come take a look at the car. Not worth the gas to drive 30 minutes if I can't get my questions answered first.
I'm going to keep my Integra until the perfect (read: bone stock, unmodified) Prelude comes along. Oh, to have 4WS though!

Hey,
I know this is like 3-1/2 years later... but did you ever get that Neutral Safety Bypass Module?
I just read the thread right now, and am going through the same situation. I have a Viper 5900... trying to install on a 2001 Accord with a manual transmission. Anyway, I was wondering how the Peripheral Electronics NSS works. What makes it keep a manual transmission from starting in gear?
Also, have you had any problems with it?
Any response would be much appreciated. Thanks

The Peripheral unit is very dependable, it keeps the car from starting in gear pretty much the same way a remote start for a standard transmission does, it gives you a "ready" or "reservation" mode, you will exit the car while it is still running, close the door and use the remote to turn off the engine, obviously to do so the car must be out of gear, this will allow you to safely remote start the car, if you do not set the "ready" mode remote start will not work.

I never leave my LS in gear when I park it.
Like anything else in my car I maintain the "E" brake to insure it works properly.
But you are correct, it can fail, but then again so could the brakes, when your driving the car, that does not stop me from driving the car.
The car could also be hit, [while parked] and I would be willing to bet more cars are damaged, when parked, by being hit by other cars then are damaged by rolling because the "E" brake failed.
On this point I will have to disagree with you, everything you do in life is a calculation of risk/benefit, in this case, IMO the benefit far outweigh the risk.
BTW, I do not have a remote start in my LS.

I also do not usually leave my car in gear when I part. I only do so in high risk theft areas and on hills. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by jgojohn »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">What do you do about all the factory production turbo charged cars that can't be left in gear? </TD></TR></TABLE>

If a car comes from the factory from a reputable company and is designed to rely solely on the parking brake and not the trans for parking, then I guarantee you that they have ensured that the parking brake alone is sufficient. That way they don't get sued. This is not the case on our 15 year old Hondas/Acuras. I'm also not aware of any Hondas/Acuras that came factory turbocharged.
Brake systems have been designed so that even when they have been severly neglected, they still stop the car. They also give a lot of warning when they need maintenance. Parking brakes by comparison give no warning that they need to be adjusted/maintained, and many people do not even know that they are adjustable. If I asked you point blank how many clicks is the parking brake supposed to max out at, or how to properly adjust the parking brake, chances are you don't know. Some people here will, but not the people that post these kinds of questions.
The starter is strong enough to pull your vehicle even when your parking brake is in perfect working condition.
If you have to change the subject to make your argument, your argument is already false. We're not talking about other manufacturers, we're not talking about braking systems. We're talking about parking with the parking brake alone on an old *** Honda or Acura. It's not reliable. Like fcm, of course I maintain my parking brake just like I maintain the rest of the vehicle. But this is a public forum, and the general public is made up of idiots that can't be trusted to do anything right. That's why there are disclaimers on silly commercials. That's why I take a stand on stupid topics like this one.
Once enough people do this that it grabs attention, a sensational/tragic case will come along, and then the whole industry will suffer.
Bottom line is that I pull dozens of cars into the bay every day. A large majority of them have loose parking brakes.
