Default Tire Warranty- Do you buy it? Performance Tires?

Do you guys buy the warranty on tires? Example being the roadhazard warranties where apparently they will replace tire if say a nail gets in it from the road- I was considering buying a set of BFG Drag Radials and putting a warranty on them- Just want to hear some opinions

That's not how it works; they don't replace a tire if a nail gets in it, if the tire is repairable. Read the details of the optional road hazard warranty before buying it. The Tire Rack warranty will reimburse you for the cost of repairing a punctured tire (and doesn't offer the road hazard warranty on competition tires like drag radials). The Discount Tire warranty only pays for replacement of the tire if it's not repairable.

Over the years, I've had numerous punctures and one case of damage from road hazards. And in every single case, it would not have been covered by any of the popular road hazard warranties (usually because the tires are beyond the period when they would have been covered).

Remember, these don't do anything for you when you're on the road; they are only for after-the-fact reimbursement.

If it's worth it to you because makes you feel more comfortable, get it. I've never felt the need.

The way discount tire's warranty was worded made it seem if it had a fragment of road debris ect in it they will replace it-- so if i inconveniently ran over a nail when the tires are getting a tad old but within the warranty period, I would be getting a brand new tire

Thanks for your input--!

Nope. Read it again. They only replace it if it's damaged and unrepairable.

That's FRAUD. It's illegal, and it's NOT a good idea.

Yup, and you still need 3/32 left on the tread, you have to ship the tire to them for 'inspection' first, and then they might give you the money back.

Also, by the time you send them the fourth tire they might get wise of your brilliant idea. Remember, no matter how great of a scheme you think you have someone much smarter than you has already tried it and failed.

cheers.

And when they measure the tread remaining they always go by the lowest tread. So if you have negative camber, you're SOL, if you have 0 camber and corner hard a lot, you're SOL.

road hazard is a gimmick
it works on some people because what happens if you pop a tire within 5 months of purchasing them, it will pay for itself.
however if you don't even use the road hazard, then you end up losing out, it's a give or take situation.
In my preference, I let it go and buy tires when I need to

Or basically if you drive a vehicle such as a denali or porsche with expensive tires, then I see the need where it would be worth it.
A civic or integra doesn't really call for rh in my poinion

what you are thinking about has been tried many of times... Where the customer tries to abuse the system it doesn't work!!! BUT YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO TRY!!!!!!!!!! Don't forget that trying to scam a business is worthy of a police call

Paying for road hazard is basically guaranteeing that you pay for a tire repair whether you actually damage the tire or not.

Also note that to get the better patch from the inside instead of a plug, they have to remove the tire from the rim, and hazard plans usually don't include re balancing.

I had to read that sentence several times before I figured out what you're saying. Basically, something along the lines of "If you get the road hazard warranty, you'll be paying for it, even though you may never actually have a damaged tire." Makes sense.

You don't necessarily have to rebalance the tire after a puncture is fixed.

Also note that road hazard plans differ from one retailer to another. For example, the one offered by Discount Tire only provides reimbursement if the tire needs replacement, and doesn't pay you anything if you have to get a puncture repaired (which is far more common than replacement due to road hazard).

The Discount Tire warranty will replace the tire free of charge on almost everything. It is free for the tire, installation, and balancing. The only thing that you could be charged for is to renew the warranty on the new tire. Also all flat repairs are free, and whenever a tire is removed from the wheel it always has to be rebalanced.

Now that IS correct. Thank you for clearing it up.

You're talking about purchasing the warranty while buying the tires at a Discount Tire retail store. Not about the warranty purchased while buying them from Discount Tire Direct (their internet division), which does not include installation or balancing or flat repairs.

Yeah that is true but when you buy tires from Discount Tire rotations, flat repairs, rebalances are all free because you are still buying them from Discount tire. This is only if you go and have these things done at a Discount store of course. When it comes to the warranty I am pretty shure that you have to call Discount Tire Direct and they will send you another tire completly free of charge. Now if they want to inspect the tire, the shipping of the old tire comes out of your own pocket. Not 100% shure but I think that is how it goes.

That's how it works. You can also go to one of their retail locations. You can read the details here. It says, "In the event one or more of your tires fail due to defect, or incurs damage that cannot be repaired, Discount Tire Direct will replace it absolutely FREE". They don't do anything if the tire needs repair, such as from a puncture.
