Transmission longevity...how many miles?
On a bone stock CRX Si, how many miles would a 5 speed normally last? Anyone here with experience on the topic?
I found a used one, about 190,000 miles for a very good price. My 4-speed is grinding and whining and needs to be replaced pretty soon. I'm just wondering if it's even worth the work. Should I keep looking?
I'm just looking to get a couple more years out of the car.
Thanks

Depends on how well it was taken taken care of. I rebuilt my Si trans at 273K becuase the ISB took a crap.
I would rebuild any used transmission before installing it anyways. Just check that it has good synchros, forks and the pinon gears in the diff look OK.
Then just get new bearings and seals and you have a new transmission for $300. Otherwise, a set of synchros is something like $180 from Gearspeed.
Or, if you don;t feel like rebuilding, rotate the mainshaft a few times and listen for bearings clicking. If they're clicking or making any grinding noises, more than likely the ISB needs to be replaced.

i pulled my dx at 296k and it grinded pretty bad, but the guy i bought it from did know what transmission fluid was...
i bought one with out checking it out and got lucky, id say its safe as long as you get it from someone reputable

Using the proper lubricants can also make a HUGE difference in the lifetime of a transmission. MANY people used to older RWD cars will fill Honda transmissions with the same 85W90 and other high viscosity gear oils that they have been using for years. But Honda transmissions were designed to use lower viscosity oils like ordinary 10W30 or Honda MTF. High viscosity gear oils can QUICKLY kill a Honda transmission, and are probably responsible for the early death of MANY.
Speaking of lubricants, simply not changing the oil can also bring a transmission to an early death. Bring up transmission oil to many, and responses range from 'What transmission oil?' to 'You mean that actually needs to be changed?' to 'Transmission oil lasts the life of the car.' With attitudes like this, it is no wonder that transmissions often die WELL before engines do.

I had a couple of wagons with the L3 dx in them....one with 270k and the other with 230k. Both were in great condition before I swapped them to Si transmissions
Its all in previous maintenance! Be sure to use Honda MTF or something similar. Anything else....you will find out in due time
I have seen a ton of failures from people using the incorrect fluid.
