my cai sucked up a ton of water yesterday....need help.
i was after i walked out of food lion it was raining real hard. i drove like a mile down military hwy, and my car just dies. i couldn't see the big flood down the road cause it was raining to hard. so i get out my car and push it out of the water(everyone on the road was looking at me like i crazy, one driver actually laughed and pointed at me) so after it's out the water i try and turn it on about 10min later and it does. but when i got like a block away from my house i went into another water puddle. i turned my car on this morning and it sounds terrible. my exhaust sounds like its a shock exhaust with a hole in it. do i have any big engine damage?
yeah you probably sucked up a bunch of water, mine did that once when it was raing hard. It stalled and if I let the RPMs below 1000 it would stall, though, it's fine now...
Lets just say do a complete check up look for little puddles anywhere just dont want to run and make it worse just check everything! and buy a Comptech icebox same performace and dont have to worry about water!
if your car is still running with no stalling problems, then the water you sucked up most likely got evaped.... so unless you can afford the check up just babier her for a little while and see if she starts runnin right again. Hydrolock usually ***** up the whole engine at once and it never works again...

And that's why I won't put a CAI on my car... but anyways, try pulling your spark plugs out and let it set under the sun. Maybe some water will evaporate. Changing the oil is probably a good idea too. Good luck.

well, to be honest, if you sucked up as much water as it sounds like, you probably have a bent rod. it might start and not stall on its own, but you might have some serious problems in the future. i've read some stories about people on h-t who've hydolocked their car and say it would start up a few hours after the incident and it would run like normal for a couple of months but the engine would blow up after a couple months. just be careful man. i'd take it to a mechanic and have it checked out.

The first time, it died and started a few minutes later. The second time, it didn't die, but I lost all power and had to pull over for a few minutes. When it happens, pull over and disconnect your intake as fast as possible. Do not turn the car off. Both of these happened after my fenderliner fell off(more like ripped off), never when it was there.

Well, either you splashed your motor and soaked your distro. cap, and that caused it to die. Or you sucked up water, and hydrolocked your motor. If you hydrolocked, as others have said, you'r prolly screwed, and the engine will blow up from a bent rod. If you only splashed the engine then you're ok. Did you acutally drive through a deep puddle, or just heavy rain?
take a huge *** metal bar or screw driver and put it on the bottom block ....and up to your ear ... you might be able to hear a knock .... i sucked up water from my cold air intake ... luckily all it did was bend a rod. .. no crank or extreme block scaring ... of course thats an engine rebuild ... but still better catch the bent rod now ... like the other guy said.,. .you will frag the **** out of other internal parts if its bent and you keep driving on it ..
if you do hear the knock ...(which you might not and it could still be bent) but youll have to weight out ... is it worth rebuilding ? you can spend some $$ and rebuild with strong internals ... and it will be strong and ready for REAL HP ... but if its a 90 teg.. and a lot of other stuff is shot .. might just want to sell it with a fucked engine .. and buy another ride. ... and save a lot of work .. but you have the perfect "project" car now hehe might even consider not rebuilding it .. but buying a complete engine swap... like a Type R or GSR (: that will save a lot of work
just change the oil. .. and drive real easy on it .. .and pay real close attention to if the engine is making any noises that it didnt make before

Get a compresion test and a leak down test done. This will tell you if you got anything bent or brokern inside. If you get low readings on the test, thats probably why your car is running like crap.
If your comp. is ok then move on to elctrical. I doubt elctrical has anything to do with it tho. Most things in your car are pretty well insulated.

Ya, pull your plugs and use small pieces of towel to dry out the block! Get a long object(I used a coat hanger) and put long stripes of towel in the cylinders that have obvious water in them. Give her an oil change and run 1000 miles then do another oil swap for safety. I also wetn ahead and got it flushed when I sucked up water during Houston's Alison storm. My car would not start until I did this, but after I did the cleaning it kinda started and got her warm and I knew she was ok. Whatever you do, dont run your motor with that water downed oil in it. Also, after you get most of the water out, crank her and watch your engiune turn into a geyser. Hope that helps, if you got more questions post.
I know im gonna get smacked for saying this, but you might want to just suck it up (no pun intended) and buy an AEM bypass valve... a little lost power, but it can serve another purpose...
When you install the valve, cut the pipe about where they would for the short ram intake, so when its raining real hard like that, you can just pop the lower pipe off, and put the filter on the shorter piece.
Also, most people claim that a short ram intake is better than a CAI on the drag strip, so this mod is probably beneficial.

I'm with Weston, I'd never put a CAI on my car. I would hate to have to change my driving schedule and style just because it's raining. My suggestion is getting a short intake and then making a DIY icebox. Good luck

I've still heard too many horror stories over the years here at H-T. Not a risk I'd take here in Colorado with the snow, slush, and some rain.
I did the EXACT same thing to my B18B. Bought a JDM B20 to replace it. Not worth fixing IMO.
One thing you can do to find out how bad it is.
Take off your valve cover. If everything looks like a milk shake (water + oil = milk shake look), then consider your motor just about toast. Good luck with everything and hope you get your car running soon.

first of all... do an oil change and then do a compression check. thats a start.

You have to really drive in alot of water to hydrolock with the ice box,enough water that the cars shot anyway.I plowed threw 1 foot of water in a down poor for about an hour with no worries at all,if I had my AEM the car would have been in the shop for hydrolocking.Has anyone ever hydrolocked with an Ice box?I know plenty of engines have been destroyed using the AEM hydrolocking.
CAI do not cause this alone. Stupid driving causes this. Just cause you have a CAI does not mean an inch of rain is gonna hydro lock you. Just dont be stupid and try to drive thru something you cant make!!
Ummmm when you drive down a road with no lights .. how are you to really know how deep the water is ? The fact remains you have the filter on the ground in a dropped car ... its just not worth it if you live in an area that it rains all the time ... i cut my CAI and converted it to a RAM.... ill come up with 5hp someplace else
