Auto Trans Problem ?
Car is a 1997 2dr DX, still has ye ole trusty d16y7 and 200+k on her.
The problem is that only when the car is in one of the drive positions, d4 d3 or 2, i get a sort of rattling noise. when i first heard it i though maybe an exhaust shroud was loose and banging around down there, but everything was on snug. Then i noticed if i shift it into the nuetral position the rattling stops. It will ocasionally make the noise when im moveing slower than 40mph, but for the most part it only does it when im stopped and in drive.
Btw it seems to shift and drive just fine, only a noise issue at this point.
any ideas?

my sister had the same problem with her 98 dx and one day i got under there and took off every heat shield that was on the exhaust manifold and one by the cat and it never made the noise again

probably has nothing to do with the tranny at all. just someting rattling. when you put it in drive it puts a slight load on the engine and changes the vibrations that it makes. set the ebrake and get someone you trust to put it in drive and hold the brake while you have a look/listen around. try pressing on things (carefull to use a tool and not your hand on hot parts) to get the rattle to stop. thats how i have found every rattle on any vehicle i have ever heard. not to say i have had to put it in drive, but just make it rattle, then find it. easy stuff.

Problem Solved !!! 
Changed out my Belts today and also attacked the strange intermitten rattling
sound. This is what i found
One of the heat shrouds by the cat was missing both bolts and had only the one on the other side holding it in place. No biggie.
Next was a shocker
This is the bottom of the cat where it attaches to the rest of the exhaust manifold(and an after shot i might add, i already put the new hardware in place), there are 3 nuts that hold this on, 2 of them were just missing... gone. Only one remained meaning that after that its just the rubber hangers that are holding that piece on
All 3 were replaced and i havent heard a peep out of it the whole day. Now all i need to do is find a junk yard with a civic exhaust manifold/cat and ill be doubly happy
