I'm planning on removing my reflective tint on my back windows (back 1/4 panel windows and rear windshield) and re-tinting my entire car. A shop is trying to charge me $75 to remove and then $175 to re-tint 5% all around (except windshield). I researched online and found a few sites, but I'm trying to find a method that does not requires a warm sunny day and more then 4 hours. Has anybody done this at home and have any suggestions or links? Thanks again.

 

I work at a shop that also does tint, stripping tint is my least favorite thing. What they are charging you is a good deal I would let them do it.

But if you want to save 75 dollars go buy a box of razor blades, ammonia, and steel wool and go to work. But whatever you do dont use the razor blades on the back window they will ruin the defroster.

EDIT: just read where you said less than 4 hours. depending on the quality of the tint it may take you more or less time than that

 

Wait, so the process goes like this?:

1) Peel off starting from corner of tint with razor blade
2) spray ammonia... let it soak
3) wipe it off
4) repeat on same window until residue is gone?

If that is correct, how would I go about removing the back windshield? Should I just do my 1/4 panel windows and have the rear window done at the shop? Thanks

 

i'm not sure if i used just a spray bottle with water.. or water and soap.. or water and alcohol... but we used one of those and a razor blade but, the tint was bubbling so it made it easier to get started and work from the crackling bubbles.

 

Yeah, get it started with the razor and peel off as much as possible that way then soak it with ammonia and (on the back window scrub it with the steel wool) on the quarters do the same but you can use the razor to scrape it off

 

How long should the process take? Seems like it isn't that long at all to be honest.

 

Depends on the quality of the tint.

The quarters wont take long at all but the back could take forever.

Just be sure to get ALL of the glue off otherwise they may charge you more when retinting it or if they dont see it and tint over it it wont look very good

 

Most of the shops said it was a pretty good tint, it's more of a dark greenish reflective type of tint. Would that make it any more difficult?

 

If they say its good then it should go somewhat smoothly. From my experience tint never comes off in one piece, good tint comes off in larger pieces and cheap tint comes off in many tiny pieces which sucks.

But for the shop to only charge 75 it shouldnt be too bad

 

Yea, well I'm only 16 and kind of short on money, but have been planning to tint my car since day 1 hehe. $75 makes all of the difference (3 full tanks for me ). Im thinking of just taking off the 2 windows and then take the rear window to a shop to do.

 

If youve never done it before thats what i would recommend.

Also ask them if they used dyed or metalized film (the type of tint) if its dyed go somewhere else within a few years it will turn purple and bubble up and be an overall waste of money

we did that on my brother's car . we used heat gun to heat the tint from the inside of the glass, the tint will turn soft, then use a razor blade to scrape it out. we dont really care about the rear defroster, so we just scrape the whole thing lol

 

oh, every time we heat 6" by 4"

 

Wow guys, I talked to my cousin who is biggest tinter on earth... She has 4 cars all limo tinted, she gets tickets everyday and it's like w/e to her haha. She told me of a place by my house that charges $15 per window! Taking it tomorrow morning to get it removed, then taking it to the other shop to have it done for $175

The tint comes off really easy! Just spray it with Windex OR Ammonia and let it soak. Start peeling with a razor from the edge and you can usually peel it with your hands. The razor is better for the glue that is left over. it's easy!

 

Yes, 75$ is a steal!

 

ive had to take my tint off twice on my front windows cuz of tickets
took me 30 min for both windows, just get some windex, spray the window down, then take the razor blade and get under the corners, if your lucky the tint will come off in one large sheet. mine mostly did.
hard part is getting all the glue off the window
