Default Do you have to take the crankshaft pulley off inorder to take the timming belt off?

I am going to change the timming belt on my gf's 96 civic ex and I was wondering if you have to take the crank pulley off inorder to get the belt off? My friend did the timming belt on his 00 civic si and he said he didn't remove the crank pulley. Is this true? What do you guys suggest?

just take the belt off at the cam gears and slip it off the crank no need to take it off

In order to put a new belt on, you have to take the lower timing belt cover off. In order to take the lower timing belt cover off you have to take off the pulley.

you have to take the motor mount loose too to put the new belt on, so do you jack up the motor a little to get the new belt on?

Yep, you gotta take the a/c (if you have it), ps (again, if you have it) and the alternator belts off, you gotta pull the motor/vibration mount off, as well as the actual motor mount (round aluminum thing with rubber insert). Then you gotta take off the crank pulley and the lower timing belt cover to get at the belt. Ain't no way around it, you might be able to get the belt off without taking off the pulley and cover, but you'd never get the new one back on and lined up on the right teeth.

That's why it costs so much to replace the damn thing.

I hear you can put a screwdriver in the flywheel so you can break the bolt on the crank pulley loose. Can I do this without removing the lower timing belt cover?
