Is ek less prone to rust than the egs?
I am parking my ek this winter because of past experiences with rust on my egs. unfortinately its outdoors. Is the ek metal a little bit better than the eg.Is my car safe from moist with a car over over it and a tarp wrapped nder it sealed on the cover w/ ductape?
i wouldnt do it....if it just sits there and theres moisture under the tarp on ur car its most likely able to rust. if i was u i would just quit being cheap if you love your car that much and put it in a storage close to your house.
It's not so much that sitting outside causes the cars to rust, it's salt/additives in the road that wear away coatings.
I would leave it on a normal car cover and that's all.

It doesn't matter if it's outside, just put a cover over it.
Honda rust occurs from the inside out. The main cause is driving on roads that have been hit with the sand/salt combo used to give cars traction as well as a catalyst to melt the ice (the salt). When you drive over this nasty *** combo it kicks up underneath your wheel well. Unfortunately Honda got this great idea from '92-'00 to not paint the inside of the wheel well.
Paint is more than just "for looks" - it's a protectant seal against corrosion of all sorts.
So you'll save a lot just from not driving on the salt/sandy roads kicking that crap up there to eat away at your frame for the next year. If you're going to store it, my advice:
Wait until a "nicer" day out. Go to the carwash, wash your car. Most importantly, wash the hell outta the insides of the rear wheel wells. You'll also wanna hit all the running gear (lower A frames, ball joints, etc.) with high pressure water - to get all the crap off of it you can. Then drive back, and cover it - avoid doing anything (like if you're driving on dirt, tread carefully) to kick more crap up there. Do that, park on dry pavement, cover it up with a car cover, and it'll be peachy all winter long.
PS: I'd also recommend pulling the battery for the winter and bringing it inside. If you leave it in your basement and you have an unfinished basement (cement floor), don't leave it on the floor, leave it on a 2x4 or somethign so it doesn't discharge.

apparently you are the only person in this thread that doesn't get it...so..
but anyway, like syndacate said, the wheel wells aren't protected.
the first thing i did when i got my hatch was sand down the wheel arches and spray them. also whenever i wash it i use that spray wax crap inside the wheel wells.
if you're storing it somewhere you may want to fill the car with some baking soda, or go to home depot and get some of the industrial size damp rid crap, does a great job of handling moisture.

i drive my ej8 all winter...sometimes i go for a few days with a ton of salt on the body..but i spray it down with a pressure washer every few days and i have no rust on the car at all.

No they've been using rust inhibiting coatings on body panels since the late 80's early 90's.

Not to mention you're wrong anyways. Honda did nothing extra special to prep 96-00 Civics over the 92-95 Civics to prevent rust. You might see more rusted EGs simply because they're older, but give the EKs more time and they too will be as rusted as the EGs.

Anyways, about the OP, I think Honda added vents inside the trunk of the EKs to help release moisture from behind the quarter panels. Atleast that is the only explanation I can think of for those vents...someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
