Default 1990 Civic; adding "cargo" strap?

This is going to sound totally dumb, but I'm a girl so I can get away with it.

I just bought a seat belt restraint for my dog, and it hooks into the car seat latches that all cars 2003+ have. Obviously my car doesn't have these. It also comes with an adapter to attach it to cargo hooks, which my car also doesn't have.
So, my question is this; I want to use this in the front seat of my car, passenger side. So is it possible to attach some sort of hook to the floor behind the passenger seat (to feed the rest of the strap between the back & the bottom of the seat to use in the passenger seat), or can I attach a hook to the actual seat, like by undoing the seat frame bolts and attaching it to that?

If neither of these are even remotely possible, then I guess I will have to get one of the ones that loops over the actual seat belt, which is a bit of a pain, IMO, as I'd have to do up the seatbelt on that side for the dog.

Anyways, dumb girly question over. Thanks in advance for any help.

you could mount a hook of some kind to the floor behind/under the seat, but then you'll have a permanant hole through your carpet and floor.

it might be possible to attach some kind of hook to a bolt on the seat rail under the seat. i don't know how this dog thing (or "seat latches") even work, so i don't know if their would be clearance issues if the hook was under the seat (you might also need to use spacers to level it out).

it would be easier to use one of the bolts that attaches the rail to the floor behind the seat. but again, i don't know how this dog thing needs to attach or what kind of hook you could use.

this probably hasn't helped at all and just made things more confusing.

Not technically the floor, but you could put it on one of the middle seat belt bolts in the back seat, then run it under the back seat cushion to the floorboard.

I <3 my doggie, too! And he's a little doggie, and moves around too much for my liking in the car, sometimes even standing right on the edge of the seat!! Twice since I've had him (exactly 3 yrs now), he's taken a tumble when I had to stop quickly or swerve, and I really don't want to have to deal with him getting hurt when I could have prevented it.

Maybe it'll help if I show you the kind of seatbelt that I got...
http://www.immioutdoors.com/pe...s.htm I just bought the "KWIK-CONNECT TETHER" (scroll down the page), as my doggie already has a figure-8 harness (and frankly I couldn't justify buying him a special "car" harness).

I'm ok with having a permanent hole in the carpet/floor of my back seat, especially if it could be sorta "hidden" under the seat, or at least close to the seat, not like in the middle of the (small enough as it is) back-seat foot area.

My dog only weighs 9 lbs, so this doesn't have to be a super-heavy-duty set-up, though obviously in a crash 9 lbs turns into a pretty hefty strain on a seatbelt.

fireant: I'm confused by what you say about the back seat. I'm wanting to put this seatbelt so I can strap my doggie into the front passenger seat. I hope you're not envisioning some sort of strap running all the way from the back (hatch) to the front passenger seat? Or were you thinking I could attach something in the hatch and have the seatbelt system in the back seat?

Thanks for your help!

Oh I get it, I didnt read it well at first... I was thinking the dog would be in the back floorboard behind the passenger seat.

Yeah, he's a HUGE dog! Especially compared to my cat (who weighs 17 lbs currently).

Here he is:

fireant; sorry I confused you. Now that you explain it that way, it would be much easier to basically attach the doggie seatbelt directly to the floor, but then my little monster would have to sit on the floor, and as you can imagine, wet (white) dog + dirty floor = dirty joke + bath... which isn't really a lot of fun. But if you can think of a way to attach it to the floor, then I can just feed the seatbelt part up into the passenger seat.

hehehe your doggie looks like my baby bear.

bear is one of these new 'designer dogs' that they call a teddy bear.

Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu. they will soon be a new 'breed'. now, im totally against these high-priced designer dogs but we got him for free at 3 months because the owner could no longer handle him.

my other 2 dogs are toy poodles. colby is 9 years old and only 4 lbs. people confuse him with a puppy all the time. our other poodle is colby's son and he's 10lbs and about 6 years old.

sorry that i wasnt much help. i normally dont drive around with my dogs in my ridgeline and theyve never been in my crx, EVER. haha so i couldnt help you with the strap. i was thinking that you could purchase eye-bolts and replace your factory passenger seat bolts with them. that way you will have 4 anchors.

My doggie is supposedly a cross between a Maltese & a Japanese Chin... I didn't buy him, so I can't be sure of that, but there is certainly a lot of Maltese in him. (And yes, he's missing an eye, that's a whole different story).

I like your idea of replacing one (or more) of the seat bolts with eye bolts. Is there any specific kind I'd need to get to make sure the bolts wouldn't break if the car was in a crash (with a human passenger)? It seems stupid to make modifications to my car for my little dog and have them actual decrease the safety for a human.
Maybe it'd be safer to attach a bolt directly to the floor and leave the seat bolts alone? If I got something like this: just big enough to attach the main clip (not the D-ring adapter), and bolted it through the floor, would that have enough strength? How would I even go about attaching something to the floor? I don't know much about the framework under the car, things like what the seat is actually attached to. I don't even know how thick the floor is!

Urgh, something that I thought was so simple... it's not. *sigh*
Thanks,
Melissa

if you buy a quality bolt, i dont think it will decrease safety at all. it's possible to buy a stronger bolt. but if you are concerned, i dont see why you couldnt install a u-bolt like that. there really isnt a frame under the car. the car is uni-body. the car is the frame. and the sheet metal is pretty thin. but, when we bolt in roll cages and what not, we are doing the same thing. drilling through the floor and adding bolts. we use a plate on the backside of the bolts. (under the car) that spreads the weight evenly and safely so the bolts wont pull out under stress or an accident. you could do the same. buy some steel plates, u-bolts, and drill the proper sizes hole through the floor of the car and the plates.

but, that pink anchor i posted is separate from the bolt. that bolt looks very very similar to the stock seat bolts too. you could probably just use something like that with the factory bolts.

you could also attach caribingers somehow too.

YAY! A solution that's do-able! Now, just to find the time to do it... working 2 jobs and trying to cope with this *stupid* horrible weather we're having, and I certainly am NOT going to be crawling around under a car in -20C weather.

I will repost after I've got something installed (with pictures).

Thanks for all the help!

maybe this could work:

(there's more hooks on the website: http://www.asianproducts.com/s...52370)

it might fit on a rear seat bolt and that would make it very easy to install, but it might keep the seat loose though.
maybe you could just mount a tow hook to the bolt. that would be "dope."

I hate Maltese's but that's because my mom ruins dog, no fault of the breed itself - their eyes get goey as hell though.

Schnauzer man myself.

Anyway, what I would recommend you, source a side mounting seatbelt that would work with the set up you bought, and just modify it to fit the seat?

Otherwise, you could easily tap into the bottom of the seat pan of the seat by unbolting 4 bolts and hook something or weld something up in there instead of blowing out your floorboard with rust.

Just a thought.

I didn't choose this dog and a small dog was never my first choice; when he's gone, I'll be getting a Rhodesian Ridgeback (and that dog will have to ride in the backseat!). His one and only eye doesn't get gooey, though.

"source a side mounting seatbelt" uh, what?

I'm not super concerned about rust, the car is already fairly rusty (it's a problem with older Hondas in Canada and our winters; they salt the roads), and I don't expect to have it for more than a year more. But that is a good point. As I don't have any welding ability, and if I simply use the seat bolts (either replace or modify), I'm going to have the problem of the dog being attached to one side or the other of the seat and still possibly going flying (albeit, less distance) in a circle should we get in a crash, which is why I was leaning towards attaching the bolt to the floor directly. Hmmm, I wonder if I can find a welder who can just weld something to the inside of the car's floor (pull back the carpet first) instead... hmmm.

Well, I guess I'll have to think about this for awhile longer.. I thought it would be so simple. *sigh*
Oh well...

And the rest of you, insulting each other: First of all, me being Canadian had no bearing whatsoever on my post, secondly, who cares? Stop being dorks and taking over threads! Surely there's an "off-topic" section in HT somewhere??
