so i was taking apart my h22 today. and i drained the oil and heard a rattling noise in the oil pan. i took the oil pan off and found these parts in oil pan. im guessin its something for the crank. if someone could tell me what it is and how major it is that it is not connected. thanks

that looks like the retainer for one of your balance shafts.
if you take off your oil pump, the balance shaft on the left is held in with that. don't know how it got out of behind the oil pump

lol yea thanks for the advice. i wasnt really plannin on drivin it. luckly i pulled the motor and decided since its out i might as well do wp, timing and balacnce belt. is the balance shaft suppose to move around like back and forth. because i think it is what holds that in place. and there is a whole in the plastic cover that looks like its not suppose to be there. it looks like the balance shaft might just burnt a hole through it.

How many miles on the engine? and Was it recently having work done on it by you or a shop?

k well i will try to get more pics when i get the oil pump off. but first i have to get that off. and it has been a bitch and a half.
how do you get this crank pulley off. i dont want to break anything more.

Heres the hole it made in the cover. it made such a perfect circle that it just looked normal so i figured nothing was wrong

that circled part im pretty sure is not suppose to be there.

heres the pics with the oil pump cover off. it took me all day to get the timing belt gear off. what a bitch. but heres the pics one the broken part thats suppose to keep to balance shaft in place. how the hell does that break. and now those bolts are going to be another bitch and a half to get out.

drill and tap. Spray some penetrant down the screw and pray it makes it down somewhere. "easy outs" work pretty good too, but if those are torqued to spec than chances are you will have to do the drill and tap method.

got the bolts out. easy out worked like its name. had no troubles. so does anyone have any idea on how this part breaks. im clueless. i went to honda to buy the new piece and the two bolts and they guy at the counter said in the last 15 years he has worked there that he has never heard of this part breaking. crazy huh. only 2 dealers in the US had the part. a place in arizona and one in rhode island. its a 20 dollar piece of metal.

yea i found it on there (magestic) and i ordered it. but then i got an email from them the next day saying that the part i ordered was on back order and they dont know when they are going to get it. so i called the place in arizona and talked them into sending me the part. so hopefully i have it soon. it almost makes me want to buy the balance shaft eliminator kit that way i dont have to worry about the part. but would kind of cost a little more than i want to spend.
looks like from the wear on that piece that the shaft was pushing up against it and it galled itself up till it broke it completely off. shouldnt be any pressure on it though really.
the damage was caused by the belt pulling the gear outward causing friction and repeated heating and cooling cycles until the bolts sheared off. tends to happen when the lower gear is intalled backwards.
Looks like the bolts were over torqued and snapped. Whoever did it did no know what they were doing-obviously. If you get a helms you will find that the torque specs for those bolts are 14 lb. ft. - very easy to over torque without a torque wrench.

nah, look at the scorring on the plate. the shaft was being pulled outward, into the plate and caused the bolts to shear. like i said, ive seen it before.
