The question should be how much experience does he have driving with XP10/12 especially since he said he is fairly new to HPDE.
The fact that he is asking would lead me to suggest that he changes his pads at the track.

There's no particular issue that would keep you from doing that if it's what is most convenient for you.

I have done it very often with XP12, for the year between the cessation of the old Cobalt Friction compounds and the production of the new Cobalt Friction compounds.

The only thing to sort of keep in mind is that, of course, your cold stops are going to be a little longer, and you're going to be dusting a bit. Even stone cold, you're still going to be able to stop the car, but it might require a pedal pressure a little different from what you'd use with street pads.

I drive to and from Summit Point with the most aggressive Cobalt Friction pads that are available for the DC2 ITR, and it has never been an issue even in the notorious rutting season.

I've driven xp10's on the street and to/from track. I only live an hour from VIR, so it isn't a big deal. I don't know that I would want to make a long 5-6hr drive using them though. Your first couple of stops can be a little unsettling when the pads are cold.

thanks guys. this gives me a general idea of what i want to do now. rotor wear and dusting is not that big of an issue for me as it is to be expected. i use aggressive pads on the street, but haven't used anything as the same caliber as the xp10's or xp12's. Brian Z recommended that i get some dedicated track pads as i am experiencing brake fade. also, my "street" pads are not as aggressive on the track as i thought they would be...

my main concern was the brake performance when it is cold. would it just basically feel like sucky low cost brake pads?

I'm partial to Cobalt Friction, that's all.

I use XR2 in the front and XR5 in the rear, on the express recommendation of a well known team.

Having said that, however, the season that I used XP12, they did very well. They had no problems providing more friction than the RA1 could handle, in all kinds of situations including more than a couple of fairly hot sprint sessions at Summit Point.

I have XP-10s on my street car. Cold stopping is about like OEM, and once they get warmed up they stop like a ****. Of course, they squeal and dust real bad, but rotor wear hasn't been a problem.

Carbotech is one of the friendliest to rotor racing pads I've known.

Like sidtc said, cold stopping is on par with OEM, but once they warm up, it really grabs.

I've been using Carbotech exclusively for the past year. Not because I'm sponsored by them. But because I'm really happy with the performance of Carbotech and there is no reason to look for anything else.

Sounds like you are in the bay area. PM or email me if you want to know more about Carbotech.

after a few stops, they warm up just fine, but the first 2-3 stops suck and you need to be conscious of that.

carbotech are my next pads, since they can make them custom if I send them a set of old backing plate. Can't wait to try them xp12
