I'm tempted to try these but does anyone know if the el cheapo ones are alumanized or just mild steel? I've seen a lot of places sell the cheap ones but they never say what the material is.

The flanges are 304. I use them on every exhaust I make. After several years of use they do start to rust, but you can expect that from any stainless. (That is used in exhaust)
