h22A W/ F20 TRANS...starter question
alright soo i have a h22a w/ an f20 tranny i have it all in my car already...my question is what starter do i use b/c right now i have a starter off an old h22. do i use a f20 starter or what? when i go to crank it over it sounds like its jus spinnin and not catchin the flywheel at all....its got my old clutch and flywheel out of an h22a aslo.
The h22 starter will work. Make sure it has a good ground and connections and the battery is fully charged. I think you might need a new one though.
How could that be? The bolt holes are just big enough for the bolts. There shouldn't be enough room for adjustment that would cause it to miss the flywheel.

because i have experienced it.

Well, what starter did you use? I know an h22 starter has lip that fits snugly in the hole on the tranny and the shaft is centered, so even if you could rotate it, that wouldn't change the distance from the shaft to the flywheel. I think the starter is just spinning on place and not protruding out.
I've never paid attention to where the starter was positioned, I just bolted it in and it started the motor. Do you thinkn I always just got lucky?
Update: Ok, well the mouting bolts are off center from the hole in the tranny, so if the starter was flipped 180° then it wouldn't touch the flywheel, but it would probably be obvious that it was backwards because it wouldn't fit in the hole properly. Is that the experience you had? lol

Pull the starter out and hold it still. Disconnect the small trigger wire and run a wire from the + battery terminal and touch it to the connector on the starter. The shaft should pop out and spin.
You can just take it to Autozone and they will test it for you.

i just know that i put the starter in first, it would just spin. This tells me that when the rod gets pushed out to make contact with the flywheel, it was too far away. So logically, i loosen the bolts and held the starter toward the back of the engine. Cranked instantly.
