Default I want to lower my car, are shocks NECESSARY?

Topic says it all. I want to buy h&r sport lowering springs for my em1. If i am to buy shocks as well, i would buy the koni yellows. However, they are about 500$. Is it necessary to buy the shocks? What do they add in terms of performance/ride quality? Price is a huge issue for me, im going to college, and the springs are only about 200$.

Opinions/input? thanks

oh btw, if i opt out on the konis, i will place the springs on my stock shocks.

upgrading shocks are necessary because lowering springs will have more spring rate.

you dont HAVE to, but then dont expect as good of a ride as possible with a good quality shock.

btw, you dont have to go with koni's either. tokico illuminas are a great performing shock at a great value.

dont buy anything less tho.

You could drive for a little bit with stock shocks, but the H&R springs are pretty stiff, they will wear out the shocks susbstantially.

yes its necessary.

do it right the first time so you don't have to do it again.

Yes, definitely get shocks to go with them. I bought H&R Sport springs about 6 years ago, and I saved up for many months to get Koni Sport shocks along with them because I wanted to do it right the first time.

I thought the H&R springs were too soft for the amount they dropped the car and got rid of them, but I'm still using the same Koni shocks now with over 150K miles on them, and they still work great. It was definitely a good investment considering I probably would have gone through 2 sets of any lesser shock in this amount of time, which would have ended up costing more than 1 set of Konis.

No they are not necessary but depending on the drop and stiffness of the spring they will wear out the OEM shocks in no time.
