Default Is clutch going out?

Sorry if this is a noobie question. How do I know if my clutch is going out? I was looking to buy this 04' EM2 from a dealer. It drove alright for having only 40K miles. But, every time I would release the clutch it felt like it didn't want to catch untill I my foot was almost all the way up on the pedal. I also have a 92 accord that I difinitely think that the clutch is going, but it's got 230K miles. Someone please help me out with this. I just don't want to buy this great car and end up having to replace the clutch already. thanks in advance.

So, I'll probably have to change the clutch out pretty soon? Would you go w/an aftermarket clutch vs. oem for daily driving?

Why are you asking if you gonna have to replace the clutch soon we just told you thats how they are. Ive had mine since 20k miles has 54k on it now clutch has always felt like that. If you are gonna replace it OEM Vs. Aftermarket depends on if your gonna boost build or just leave it stock. Stock OEM is fine....

I have bought my 04 EX with 40K on it and i dont have to press halfway to switch gears as well. Your clutch is not going it is just how they are set up on these cars. You are fine and the clutches should last well over 125K miles of use i even know some buddies who beat the **** outta these cars and have the original clutch in em for over 100K!!!

these clutches suck. Actually come to think of it, the whole shifting experience in the EM2 is rather dull.

A bushing set and a good short throw like B&M or Revo brings a world of help.

maybe, but there are other things that bother me more such as the seat, which rocks back and forth constantly, 4x4 ride height, "floaty" suspension, and crappy all season tires.

the only thing making it an acceptable DD is the 40 or more mpg that i get.

Are you serious? Man, i love the way the em2 gearbox is. For a stock car comparision, the shifts are amazingly smooth. Have you ever driven a Pontiac Sunfire? The stick in that car is rediculous, its like a pole sticking out of the ground.

Thanks for all the info ya'll. I'll just use it until it really goes. I'm hoping to go negotiate about the car tonight. The dealer is asking 11,900.00. But, I noticed 3 major things, 1-major scratch on the front bumper on driver's side, 2-dent behind the drvr's door before the wheel, and 3-a smaller dent w/multiple indention behind the passenger door also before the tire well. ?? $10K ?? lmk. thanks.

it's pretty sloppy still. compare it to what honda has done in the past. Have you ever shifted a b-series hydro? makes everything else feel under par.

Thanks for all of the replies. I've decided not to get the EM2. After looking at the car in there service bay (away from the 10 deg. weather yesterday night), I found a total of 4 fist size dents. They gave the print out of the autocheck report and I noticed a "collision". Were they suprised? Yep! Well to make it short, they told me that I could even make $ off of this car if I were to resell it. (What the @#$%) Anyways not going to get it. To much minor details that tell me to stay away from this one. Thanks again. Oh, when I test drove it again last night, the clutch was still the same. But now when I put it back into N and coast to the next light, the gas pedal sticks and kept the revs about 1500 rpm. Yeah, bye bye.

It's called a hydraulic clutch, it's designed so that you don't have to put your foot all the way to the floor. Sorry it's late but I thought I'd put my two cents in.

The gas pedal wasn't sticking. Hondas and many other cars have a higher idle to help the engine warm up.

the car holds it idle like that when your still moving even not on the gas , so you have full steering control. to keep the pump turning fast enough to turn easily. also so you have full braking control. with the car in neutral or park if auto , pump the brakes hard over and over , what happens? it idles up. when your sitting still , turn the wheel back and forth , what happens? it idles up. the fact the car holds its idle high when your in neutral but moving is normal dude.
