Default returning flashing "D" trans indicator - no codes, tranny works

Hi,

My 2003 Ody first showed the "flashing D" in the trans selector indicator at about 68K miles. Upon restart of the car, it has always gone away. The transmission operates as it did when new (which in my book is not perfect, but is "OK" by the Honda folks).

Over the next 23K miles this light has occasionally come on, say 6 or so times, but never gave an error code. Twice it occurred while my generic ODBII code reader was attached to the car - still no codes thrown.

Then over the last four days it the flashing "D" has happened a total of 9 times over about 400 miles. Still, it always clears upon restart, and no change in tranny behavior.

Honda says that if there is no stored code, don't worry about it. But my wife worries. Alot. It is an emotional thing about unreliable cars, so I need to deal with it now.

The tranny has the extra cooler installed, and has been changed per mfg. recommendation + had the recall inspection. (at 92K it needs a third change). I have looked through the FSM, and the best one might conclude is that this is an electrical problem. I also notice that the on occasion the "D" indicator sometimes varies in intensity slightly while just driving or idling. I have also noticed it vary intensity as the turn signal blinks (huh!?).

I saw one post for a CRV (year not specified) that had the TCM software upgraded for $200 to fix a similar problem. Might that apply here? Or does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks, Eric
