Default Modified Mag K24/K20 motor build

Finally finished building a K24/20 for my EG road race car. It took a lot longer to get this engine together than we had hoped (waiting on a few parts and then our engine builder, Gord Bush, was super busy keeping the Kensai Racing Grand Am Koni Challenge TSX's and RSX's running with super fresh motors all season), but when we did finally get it on the dyno the numbers turned out quite nicely.

Here are some specs and pics, but the full story will appear in Modified Mag's March issue.

K24A2 shortblock
Lightened and balanced crankshaft
Ross 12.5:1 1mm over pistons
IB Spec rods with the sexy teflon coating
Cometic head gasket
K20A2 head
Skunk2 Stage 3 cams, valve springs, and retainers
Skunk2 exhaust cam gear
25 degree VTC (didn't have quite enough clearance for RSX VTC)
RBC intake manifold
DC5 R 65mm TB
DC Sports k-swap header
Vibrant CAI and 3'' exhaust (no cat)
104 octane gas
Hondata K-Pro, tuned by Turtle on a fairly conservative reading Dynojet

ended up settling on 276.6whp and 204wtq with a fairly conservative tune. Didn't want to push our luck too much with ignition timing or fuel. Lots more power there if we wanted to get aggressive with the timing, but for road racing you need reliability so we set things up very safely. That's also the reason we're only revving this engine to 7600rpm. With more rpm, a bigger TB, and a bigger header and who knows

Turtle, the master engine tuner, hard at work. His brain is BIG! As for the rest of him, you'll have to talk to his girlfriend...

Unfortunately we weren't able to run this engine at GT Live like we planned, but we still did OK at that event with a stock K24 and s mild set of cams. Looking forward to unleashing the full fury of this built K24 on my fellow competitors next year

Many thanks to all the parts suppliers including Skunk2, IB/Blueprint MFG, Ross Pistons, Cometic, ARP, Vibrant, DC Sports, Fluidyne, Hondata, and Gord Bush Performance.

Oh, almost forgot the random gratuitous action shot!

very nice
would be nice to see a 74mm throttle body and a ssr swap header on that thing.

For sure, will be looking into options like a bigger TB and ported RBC or maybe even ITB's along with a serious race header. I think we can pick up another 20whp this way, but for a $250 header I gotta say the DC Sports k-swap header is a darn good value.

20Hp is on the high side.. with a good header i could see it making 12-15Hp But i would totally agree with you that the DC sport header is bang for the buck i myself will tell the truth when a customer is tight with money for a high dollar header. You can only gain so much for a stock application. It's a exponential power gain vs. engine combination. Swapping from a DC sport to a custom header will only yeild as much as the motor demands.. Great job... Oh to give you an example we did a similar motor like this and we are making around 288hp 290hp at 210ft

JDM NSX 'Lime Green Metallic', actually

The splitter is custom built by Auto Analyser Racing (SPEED World Challenge team that runs a couple Lexus IS300's in that series and good friends of mine). More info on it here:

Interesting. I don't see Ross pistons too often in the Honda world. Good results

Verry nice results. Im shooting for same results with my wife's car. She is now making 230whp/186wtq on her stock K24a2 with RBC and ASP race header.

Mohsin and anyone else wanting more info on the splitter, best bet is to contact the builder at andrew@autoanalyser.com

SSR, thanks for the feedback. Appreciate your honesty. I'll have to get in touch with you guys over the winter about a header tech story I want to do for the magazine - maybe we can combine the tech story with a K24 header build and show people some real results to go with all the theory? That'd make for a pretty cool story, I think.

Ross Pistons are huge with the DSM guys and Ian @ Ross is a really smart guy...definitely knows his stuff! I wouldn't hesitate to use their pistons again. Hell, AMS runs Ross pistons and these guys have the fastest drag and time attack EVO's out there.

Been using Gord for engine builds for years...nobody better in my books, plus he's the most honest and straightforward guy in the world to deal with, which makes the whole process that much more fun. Gord builds Kensai Racing's motors and they came within 1-2 points of winning the drivers championship in Grand Am Cup Koni Challenge this year with one of their TSX's and all their Hondas consistently ran at the front all season long. Gord's motors make jam!

With 10-15 degrees more VTC, some more ignition timing, a bigger T/B, a fully ported RBC manifold, and a better header (a la SSR of course ) 20 more WHP is actually very achievable. A ported RBC alone will give it another 7-8hp across the board, and advancing the intake cam to 35-40 degrees should pick up at least another 5-7hp. The rest is in the t/b and header. We have similar setups like this, but fully modded, making 300-305 whp.

Nevertheless, awesome setup!! Cant wait to see that pimp *** suspension get dialed in and some more hp Should be a good year in '08. Love the paint job btw

you think a longer intake would help that out Tony?

Iceman (if still in business, not sure) should do the opposite side headlight intakes for the K EG's, that would help... at the track.
