First, I would like to say, traveling south on Roberts Road is like any other two lane street, except at the intersection of Roberts Rd. and 111th. The right, outer lane could choose to either go straight, or turn right at the intersection, while the left inner lane on Roberts Rd. has the choice to only turn left, although it does open up into a double turn lane. About 1000ft from the intersection, is where the actual merge in the lane begins. The yellow line veers to the left therefore making it possible for there to be another turning lane available. From the point of the beginning of the merge to the actual point where the two lanes are definitely determined is about 300-350ft. Definitely not enough room for two cars to fit inside of before the lanes are actually separated by the dotted or solid lines.
I was driving south on Roberts Rd at 6:45am on 12/7/07 my daily route to work every morning. I was coming up to the stoplight on Roberts Rd. and 111th st, driving in the left hand lane, when I approach the lane situation on that corner, I put my turn signal on, check my mirror and proceed to follow a solid yellow line into the left side of the left turn lane. Not even two seconds later my head breaks through the driver side window and I feel the door crush my leg. I then stop the car as soon as possible, and see the offender jump across the opposite lanes of traffic, up over a good 8” curb and drive a good 200ft in the snow before stopping. He then proceeded to run out of his truck, curse at me and act as if he was going to assault me. This happened all when I was stuck inside of my car. I then proceeded to get out through the passenger side of my vehicle to have him contunue to yell unnecessary comments at me, at which point I tried to walk away to call my Parents on the phone to avoid any more confrontation with offender.
As I saw the police coming down the street to the accident, the offender moved his truck off the lawn of where he initially stopped as if not to seem like he was going at an excessive amount of speed at the time of the

accident. The police and ambulance got there at the same time. While the paramedics were trying to talk to me the officer asked for my insurance card and license, at which point I went to the passenger side of the vehicle and retrieved it for him. I then said my license was in the driver’s side door panel. The officer said he would get it. The officer then came straight to the ambulance and said that I better not leave the hospital because was not able to find my license, he then proceeded to leave. The officer never took any kind of statement from me, Never asked what happen, nothing. I have never been treated with such disrespect by an officer before, especially considering I was just in a terrible car accident.
I was then taken to the hospital. I had to have x-rays and a cat scan taken. While the nurse was wheeling me in to get my cat scan, the officer showed up at the hospital, stopped them from taking me in the room, made me sign an I-bond, and presented me with three tickets. My reaction was, “I received a ticket for what?” The officer said nothing and continued to walk away and go about his day. If the officer did not take my statement at the scene of the accident, nor at the hospital, then how is he able to come up with an accurate report as to what happened that day other than take the offender’s word for it.
My Parents showed up at the scene shortly after to see the officers standing around. My father went up to ask where was the other car involved in the accident. One officer proceeded to say: “It’s that car over there, but don’t go over there the guy is really upset.” Then my dad goes to my car, asks an officer if he could move it out of the street. One officer stopped traffic, letting him pull into a side street. Another officer then pulls behind my car and asks my dad what he was doing. He said “I am moving it out of the street, the other officer said it was ok, and I am having a tow truck come for it now. The officer demanded the keys from my father and said he has a tow truck coming and he was taking my car. My father then said, “I have a truck coming, it’s already taken care of. The officer said, “If you do not give me the keys he will just drag your car. Either you pay $150 or he is going to take your car.” Well, it wound up my parents having to pay $100 cash for the tow truck driver not to take my car.
The following day, I went to the Palos Hills Police Station with my father to speak with Ltd. Sam Nelson to try to get something resolved as to why things were handled the way they were and about the conduct of the officer. He tried to explain a few things, but said he would discuss it with the

officer and get back with me at a later time. The accident happened on Friday 12/7/07, I went to the station the following day, and he (Sam Nelson) said he would get back to me personally. He has yet to do so. And today’s date is: 12/18/07. I have been to the Police Station a few times over the past week, and I have gotten no response, as if they hope it would just go away.
I always look in my mirrors, I always use my turn signals, I am a very cautious driver, meaning I am always paying attention to things going on in front of me, behind me, and around me at all times. The offender came out of absolutely nowhere traveling at an excessive amount of speed behind me. The only thing I can think of that he was trying to do was beat me into that turn lane by riding the median. The offender comes flying up from behind me, and tries to go around me by crossing the yellow line… and for what, to try to beat me to a red light? The light was red. It doesn’t add up. Its plain and simple, anyone who knows that intersection, knows exactly what I am talking about. And just because a police officer takes one statement and decides his report on that, that is going to determine whether or not the offender pays for damages to me and my car? I am not accusing anybody, but it was handled as if the police officer handling the case already decided who was as fault without asking for my side of the story. It made me wonder who this man was, someone important, maybe a friend of the officer, or a fellow police officer or something like that. Things were definitely not handled the way they should have been.
I hope after reading my statement it will give you a better picture of the intersection and what actually took place. I will be enclosing pictures of my car, along with some pictures I could get to describe the intersection, along with the tire marks in the snow from the offender after he hit me. To be coming up to a red light, and for a suburban to hit an Acura with that hit of an impact and then go flying across opposite lanes of traffic, up a curb and spinning out, but “supposedly” according to the police report he slammed on his brakes but it was too late. Seems to me he not only was the one who should have gotten the ticket for improper lane usage, but should have got a ticket for speeding too fast for conditions as well, but that is for you to determine. I hope I have proved my case. I will be contacting a lawyer to pursue this further with regard to how things were handled and how this should have been handled.

I am not accusing anyone, but it was treated as if the offender had special treatment throughout this whole ordeal. He was the one who hit me from behind, from the back of my car to the front, told his own story to the police, left the scene before everything was even checked out, where the vehicles ended up, what could have happened etc. Nothing was investigated properly whatsoever, otherwise I would not be making this statement out right now. I would also like to know how the person who hit me is named as a witness on my ticket, therefore enabling his insurance to say they are not liable for the accident. Of course the person who hit me is going to alter the story in their favor.
Thank you for your time and fair consideration of this incident.
