Default How much boost can a H22 take?

How much boost could I run my H22 on w/o having to do any internal work to it? Also should I buy the turbonetics turbo kit or bild my own. This is a daily driver! Any suggestions will help.

Don't go any higher than 300whp on stock pistons.

Do you have a boosted prelude? Do you have any experience with a stock turbo h22?

It all depends on what turbo you use. Of course the bigger turbo you have the more power it will make at a lower psi as compared to a smaller sized turbo. I am going to be running a t3 turbo in my h22 pretty soon. I have it set up. I am aiming for approximately 280whp just to be safe until I get my bottom end fixed up. Just don't be stupid with it and WOT everywhere you go. But just like mgags7 said, don't go over 300whp on stock internals you are almost gauranteed detonation. Also make sure your motor is in good shape. You dont wanna boost and blow a ring within a week. Just keep that in mind. Thats why I bought a spare h22.

Answer to your question :: Run 5.5 psi on a small turbo, yielding apprx. 235 whp. It's all in the tune. Even with a great tune, I personally wouldn't go above 6 psi. Call me a conservative, but with a DD, you'll want to be safe.

are you talking about a spare turbo or engine? i mean thats awesome but no many people have an engine to pull outta the closet like an old pair of shoes... doing it right the first time is not the most popular idea however it is, in fact the most relieable....

"wow...o my"

There has been people that have blown at 6 psi... the amount of psi has nothing to do with it.

Trust me... stock internals is a bad idea because here's what going to happen... assuming he has the ability to control boost via a manual boost controller, he will be like holy **** this is what 5 psi feels like, thats not toooo bad how about 6, lets try 7, that went great here's 9, and before you know it you've got blow by...

Just not an overall good idea for someone who doesn't know what they are getting themselves into....

Lol I have a spare h22 longblock that I bought for $300 dollars. Deals huh? But yeah I agree on doing it right the first time. Find a reputable tuner because if your tuner sucks then good luck finding another car. I have heard of too many horrors stories with bad tuning.

True that. too many people get a little too fancy with their boost controller and end up having to walk home.

It is the bitter root of most all dead boosted stock h's. That and the conditon of the motor to begin with. How else do you explain the record 520whp stock h22. Others like c61lude aka ludetech with 330whp @ 9 pounds stock block. After a year of boosting parted it out and sold the car with a perfect comp ratio.

i wasn't talking about a fancy boost controller i was talking about the boner controlling it... getting greedy and a bad tune not a good mixture...

The pressure exerted on the piston after combustion has occurred, the force driving it down, is what breaks the ringlands on pistons.

A measly 16psi of boosted intake charge squeaking in during the intake stroke and being compressed at even a 10:1 ratio still comes nowhere near putting the some amount of force on the rings as does the flame generated from the combustion of the mixture.

So, people saying, "don't run anything higher than 8lbs" are full of hearsay BS.

However, the pressure exerted on the piston by the flame is what produces the engine's torque output, and given the normal powerband for an h22 setup, you can make such estimates as to what power level is safe for those ringlands, and what isn't.

So, when someone asks what is "safe" to run on a stock bottom end, you tell them how much power you can safely make, not how much boost to tune it to.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by v13tx1301 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">But just like mgags7 said, don't go over 300whp on stock internals you are almost gauranteed detonation.</TD></TR></TABLE>

You would get detonation as a side effect of a poorly tuned ecu, not because the bottom end is stock. What I can guarantee you is that if you tune it poorly and detonate a bunch, you have a very good shot at completely ruining that bottom end quickly.

Record this and that, but the fact of the matter is, you're taking a dumb chance. If you don't care about the engine, why not, otherwise, do it right the first time.

Breaking ringlands isn't a slow, drawn out problem, they break, done, your engine is screwed. Until they break, there is nothing that is going to make compression #s deteriorate any faster than they would in any other setup. That explains why C61 had good numbers afterward, he got lucky with the ringlands, others didn't.

I fully believe you could make over 400whp on a perfect tune, but I have yet to see anyone do it.

also boost levels can be different based on that turbo's compressor map... based on it's flow efficiency for example: t3/t4 .63 a/r makes almost as much power at about 14 psi as a t3/t4 60 trim at like 7psi

Factory rings and ringlands are the problem (very weak) doesnt take as much detonation as you would think...

Matt what your saying is correct but there is no magical 300whp being too much. You can recommend not going over 300whp. But you said dont go over 300whp like it was a fact. People have done it many times and have been just fine. I wouldnt recommend going past 300whp either but its no definite number. As I said before the record is something like 520whp tuned by St00ped, which is a lot more than 300whp and lasted over like 100 dyno and strip pulls. Then something with the head messed up. Bottom end was still perfectly fine.

Correct burnetts that's why it is relative to power output and not psi.

I just got done telling you that.

I have seen lots of people run around under 300whp on stock pistons for a long time, and I have seen none run around over it and last, so 300 is the number I say. Of course it isn't a magical number.

I still think it can be done without sleeves but without stronger rings and ringlands i dont think so matt...

i got stock ringlands from 10psi you can see...

Dont forget when you guys keep talking about the magical preludes of all this kid wants a DD...

Yea Matt your right... I just misunderstood what you were saying.

Sh are you saying you dont think anyone can make 400whp with a perfect tune on stock block?
