Gasoline smell coming from vents?!

Smell just started today and it's already driving me nuts. It's fine on the highway and when I slow down, I notice a hint of raw gasoline from the air vents mostly when the blower is on. It's an 89 DX hatch completely stock. Under the hood I see no visible signs of fuel leakage and I do not smell any gas. Walking around the car sniffing reveals nothing. No dripping under the car or anything. As I don't see any leaks and can only smell the odor when the car is on, I'm thinking it might have to do with the venting of the air in the tank...... but behind the dash?
Anyone have an idea on what I should be looking for? I'm planning on taking it on a 3 hour drive out of town for Thanksgiving
Thanks!

maybe check your charcoal canister....there are ways to test it.....i mean a car this old usually its best to just get a new one....if not check the pcv.....its probably not recirculating the mixture back into the intake....
i have mine completely gutted....i get the same smell....it happens.

i have the same problem, however mine is more of a burning-oil, rich gas mixture smell. i have a gutted cat but i still believe its my charcoal box. i replaced the pcv valve and it still didn't go away.

There is a line from the bottom of the charcol canister that runs into the frame make sure this ln has not come off. I believe this is connected to the tank venting
Had similar issues a while back.
I checked the exhaust manifold, fuel lines, replaced the doughnut gasket by the Cat, etc...
I finally found the source - The PVC line had come out of the intake manifold. It's under the "log" so it's hard to see.
This did it for me - no more stink (and it was bad when at a stop) and it was FREE
