Sudden shift lock & transmission problems
Hey guys. I have a 91 lx auto. When I went to go to work this morning I could not get the shifter out of park. The only way I could get it to shift into drive was to engage the key interlock. Reverse worked fine, it went right into drive but then didn't want to shift into 2nd gear unless I rev'd over 4k and released the accelerator very quickly. Shifting to 3rd is even worse. It wont shift into 3rd unless i get close to 5k and let off real quick. Most of the time I can't even get it to go into 3rd. Are these problems related?? I have had no problems with either the shift lock or the transmission up to this point it just was all screwed up this morning out of nowhere.
The atf looks good, the throttle control cable looks to be working properly, any ideas?

I cant see the two being related. To check the interlock check your brake lights. The same circuits operates both. If your brake lights are out a bad brake switch will cause a bad interlock. As far as the shifting, couldnt say at this point.
Thanks. Does anybody else have any ideas about the transimission problems. I have no check engine light or anything and like I said no previous signs of any problems. Anything I should do b4 I take it somewhere to get looked at?
yeah i checked the fluid and its full. good suggestion with the speed sensor. sounds like that could be the problem because it downshifts sooner than usual too. I'll check that out.
ok the rear window brake light is not working but the regular tail lights are. is the malfunctioning window light the problem for the shift lock? now if it is, i need to check the shift lock solenoid correct?

3rd brake light has nothing to do with the interlock. Its probally just a bad bulb. Its turkey day but when I get some time ill investigate the curcuit to indentify fuses, grounds etc. and get back to you.

No, but the brake switch does. Which is by far the most common problem I see with the interlock systems.

Tailights are working which usually rules out brake switch.
