Default twingling a D16

has anyone ever experimented with changing tha timing and positioning of tha pistons. example.. making it so cylinders 1&2 power strokes are closer togeather and 3&4's are closer togeather. im just curious if tha hp/tq #'s can be improved this way and also rpm responsiveness. i want ur opinion and info. i hope i made sense here...

i know its going to take a custom crank, cam and a chip. so far ive only heard of it being done on bikes..
