Default Beater Material? Opinions PLEASE.

Hey guys,

first off I know NOTHING (nada) about Civics, their engines, or any common problems they may have. I currently DD an S2000 and am looking for something beater worthy. I came across this '92 Civic DX. Other than being slow as *****, it isn't half bad. Other than being a tad ricey (If I get it I'm removing all the stickers), it looks decent. The wheels will be swapped out for stock ones. The only problem I felt while driving is a little bit of auto transmission hesitation. The car has 14x,xxxx miles. When I was driving along and it shifted you could REALLY feel it. Other than that, it will be $1800 and possibly lower. "This car won't last long "

So my question is, what should I look for specifically? I drove it for about 3 miles and checked under the car and so no visible oil drips. What else?

I'm off to work now so I will check back later. Thanks in advance.

Personally, if I was to get a DD beater, I wouldn't get a "modified car". Not because of aethestics or anything, but just because the car has been previously tampered with.

However, I'd look for rust, torn boots, leaks.

I'd pass on this, too. I have never trusted Honda auto transmissions. Seems like this one is on its way out, too. Also, the car's repainted, which means it's been in an accident or salvage title?

For a strict daily driver, you should look at an Accord, maybe? Bit bigger and less theft prone than this hatch.

Just find something more reliable than a modified car for DD.

That is one of the most godawful hatches i have ever laid eyes on, hands down. It looks like the motor was raped by oranges. For the love of god and all that is holy, please de-rerice that thing.

Painted power steering high pressure hose FTW.

Seriously those auto trannies are actually very solid, and very chep since there's very little demand for them.

Having said that the car looks scary. Looks like a kid who had no money just decided to do "free" mods and probably drove the **** out of it to have busted that auto tranny.

I mean $1,800.00 is cheap, but do yourself a favor and find a cleaner one with a 5 speed in case you ever get the itch to do a swap. Trust me there are too many people who buy "beaters" and say "I'll never mod this car" only to turn them into faster-than-their-S2000 track cars.

Thanks. Your input has helped a lot. Its pretty difficult finding a good DD with great gas mileage nowadays. I guess I'll pass. NEXT.

I don't consider a Maaco paintjob where EVERYTHING is painted "clean." bumper grilles, side moldings, side skirts, - **** the rain channels on the roof - all are painted. also there's paint over dents too. I think the pics probably make the car look nicer than it really is body/paint wise.

Even more reason to NOT buy one that's been painted shitty. If it were a show car you could but it, have the entire body smoothed over, repainted, and replace all the OE parts that were painted that weren't supposed to have been painted.

Oh also if someone is stupid enough to spray bomb an engine and it's accessories with red/orange paint, and stupid enough to let someone do a horrible tapeless paintjob then i'm also guessing that they are stupid enough to ride on blown shocks with cut springs or truly shitty coil-over sleeves too.

The entire car rings of overall shittyness from the pics.

the car "looks" well taken care of. but are you talking about a daily driver,or a true beater? cause thats not a beater. if i bought something like this for a DD, id be way too tempted to swap it and clean it up. i dont think it would be a DD for very long if it were me.
