Default valvetrain? what to do? supertech? ferrea? bc? skunk2? cowler? rev, RM

Basically I have been trying to find a valvetrain for my B20Vtec build. The head is getting ported, and I will be running about14:1 compression on E85. Bottom end will be eagle rods and wiseco pistons.

Seems the cheapest I have found are supertech - most expensive Ferrea!

I need to know if it is really worth the extra money?

What order would you rate there quality? Is there even really a difference in quality between any of them?

Also what cams would you all recomend?

I have found Crower, RM, Skunk2's all for around the same price!

I probably wanna keep it fairly streetable so nothing too crazy!

I was thinking skunk2 pro 2's, Crower 2's? Are any of them not worth a damn? Blox?

Run the valvetrain recommended with the camshaft. If you have a warrenty issue then you'll be covered.

How do I know what valvetrain they recomend?

Rocket?

Obviously Crower recomend Crower and Skunk2 - Skunk2!

Is that really important?

Rocket has his own valvetrain.

Yes, this really is important.

Im trying VERY hard not to nitpick at yet another thread youve created, but if you contact CROWER, please dont refer to them as CROWLER as they will probably just snicker.

Anyway, youve already gotten good advice here, match the camshaft with the valvetrain, manu. wise. If you want to mix-n-match, thats fine too, but then its all on you if something goes boom. Heres a tip: run just enough spring to adequately control the valves. Anything more just eats up horsepower.

If you dont know how spring pressures are measured, you have some more studying to do.

Too little spring pressure and your valves will float. Too high spring pressure and you will be looking at a head rebuild and cam replacement. That's why I said run what the camshaft maker recommends.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Master of the Universe &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">BVTEC Spring Test

Cliff Notes for the Spring Chart

1. The 0.00 Lift Column is Closed Pressure aka Seat Pressure, pressure when the valve is closed.

2. Look at the 0.500 lift column to see the Open Pressure. OE B16/GSR springs cannot reach this lift so look at the 0.400 lift column for Open Pressure for these springs.

Quick Notes

1. Lift at Coil Bind means the spring is solid at this lift. General rule of thumb for BVTEC is that there should be at least 1.5mm travel over maximum valve lift. This means if you have 12.00mm valve lift then you need at least 13.50mm travel before coil bind.

2. B16 dual spring coil binds at 12.2mm. You cannot safely use this spring with 12mm camshafts without over stressing the spring or binding the spring.

3. Supertech H1002D spring pressure and lift capabilities match all manufacturer specs except for seat pressue. Seat pressure from test is only 60lbs vs. 70lbs as specified by Supertech. It is common to have some variance between spring testers in the lower pressures.

4. ITR springs allow for use of 12mm camshafts but this would be an extreme limit for lift capabilities. The relatively low pressure does not allow for any extended rpm usage without increasing risk of valve float and resulting engine damage from same.

5. B16 Single spring lacks pressure to run any performance camshaft safely.

Springs are tested with RM Retainer and OE spring seat.

Rocket Motorsports valvetrain has been put up against the largest of cams that are available and have never <U>once</U> failed, even at 10k +. PLEASE, someone prove me wrong. Hey Tbone, how did those Gen1's hold up for ya?
