Bad ground, bad VSS, or bad cluster would be my guesses.

Check your speedometer wire. And all your fuses too.

Only if the tach is doing that. I had a similar prroblem where it would jump, then a week later it would died intermittently. I retightened the screws behind the speedometer and it fixed the problem.

Fuses? Its either a good fuse or a blown fuse. A fuse doesn't intermittently work.

Check the connection at the VSS. Make sure that it is on shuggly and that the connectors are not erroded. Clean them up and give it a try.

If I only knew what exactly you meant by, the mph jumping.. my guess would have to be the distributor is loose. that can be one of the problems even though you didnt mess with it(taking a guess on that), check that out too.

I've got the same thing happening in my wife's car right now. If you throw a CEL, it's the VSS sensor. If no CEL, then you're looking at a bad speedo head in the speedometer. You can replace the speedo seperate from the rest of the cluster, or replace the whole cluster.

Did you use the same transmission with the last motor? If so, you would have the same VSS as you did with the last motor. If not, you may have somehow gotten ahold of 2 bad sensors, or you may have an issue somewhere in the wiring.

On that note: did you have the CEL scanned to make sure it's related to the speedometer problem?

Still sounds, and looks (sic_da_nine) like you guys are having a bad VSS problem. If your CEL is 17, which Im assuming it is, its your VSS. Change it. Just go to a junkyard and pull one if you cant afford a new one, its only 1 10mm bolt.

got it working!

found out i had a blown fuse...
about 20 miles after replacement..it blew again...

i followed the min harness under the intake manifold...and found out that some wires were exposed

i taped them up real good...and yet to have a problem...

went to drive it around the block to see if my speedo was fine and got pulled over for no front plate :[
