No type alone will give you a good increase in power.

Incorrect.

There are numerous OE honda pistons that will increase compression, thus increasing whp and torque.

I personally built my D16A6 non-VTEC 1.6L SOHC engine with higher domed P29 pistons and the engine rips much better than a regular old D16A6.

..but in the end you will either spend a lot of money on labor, not a lot in parts and still not be crazy fast, or if you are capable of doing the build yourself then it can be done pretty cost effectively and it'd be worth it IMO.

Really? How much more with just pistons? Can't be a lot.

If you don't think going from 9.2:1CR (stock D16A6 and D16Z6 CR) up over 11:1CR (hell some pistons get retarded 13:1CR if you really want to go nuts) won't yield better than "can't be a lot more" horsepower gains then I don't know what else to tell you.

Not to mention the obvious "repair" that would take place if one were to hone and/or bore cylinders, replace bearings, gaskets, etc. I mean rebuilding a miled up, crusty-*** engine with stock parts alone will yield some gains. Toss in some added compression and the gains are better than you might think.

We are arguing just to argue at this point though. Increasing CR will raise horsepower and torque - you can debate by how much all you like, but you originally said:

...and I respectfully disagree from first-hand experience with me rebuilding my own SOHC and having it rip after I was done.

Now is it worth it to a regular guy looking for crazy hp?

Probably not.

Most people have this idea of rebuilding a SOHC to go and roast GS-R swaps, and honestly that isn't usually the case. I happen to work at a shop, so I could do all my own work (except some machine shop stuff like pressing new pistons and wrist pins onto my old rods) so for me it was actually fun, relatively cheap (actually much cheaper than a swap in my EF because of mount kits, linkages, etc.) and I wasn't expecting world domination out of it.

What I did get was a non-VTEC SOHC engine that hangs with, and sometimes runs quicker than some B16A swaps and every LS swap I've ran across thus far.

Also people seem to think that pistons are an easy thing to do. What they don't realize is that you're completely tearing down and rebuilding the entire engine, which requires a degree of skill, patience, and a certain extra level of money well beyond just buying pistons themselves.
