Default Speed Sensor Issues

I'm having issues with my speedometer/odometer on my trusty daily driver.
93 civic 1.5 SOHC DX

It's really weird b/c 90% of the time it hasn't been working. The few times it does work, I've noticed have been when there's a lot of moisture in the air (raining or really humid). When it's working, the speed is dead on and it is registering the right speed (or no speed at all when not work).

I haven't been able to figure out if this is common in a non-functioning speed sensor... or if mine is still working.

I've tried unhooking it and cleaning the contacts w/ rubbing alcohol, but that didn't do anything. Any ideas?

Also, if I have to replace the speed sensor, are there any issues with buying one of the cheapies on ebay? ($25 shipped) Or do I need OEM... can I save some bucks and hit up an autozone?

No it doesn't have to be oem you can even go pull one from the junkyard just make sure its from the same tranny (auto or manual).

i am PRAYING it isn't electrical...

It doesn't really jump, i mean it usually won't work, but sometimes it will. I guess it jumps to the proper speed when it comes to life.

I've found it is more likely to work when it is wet out, or if I am going 80+
but even then it is rare

Nobody has any help for me??

I got pulled over today and tried to use the "my speedo just stopped work" line (which is true in this case)

i got my speeding ticket + a ticket for a non-functioning speedometer, which i can get dropped if i have it fixed.
i guess i can go have a shop write something up for me, but i'd really rather get it fixed.

please help!?!?

Did you get a new unit? have you ever checked the connections at the cluster? Does any of the wiring on your car look hacked? Or the vss wire look hacked?
