MULLAGHMORE, Ireland : Sebastien Loeb won the Rally Ireland on Sunday and became heavy favorite to win the World Rally Championship for a fourth straight year.
The Frenchman finished in the top five of Sunday's four stages to produce an overall time of 3 hours, 1 minute, 39.2 seconds.
His Citroen teammate, Dani Sordo of Spain, finished 53.4 seconds back in second place, while Jari-Matti Latvala of Finland came third, 1:48.2 behind Loeb.
Loeb took full advantage of Marcus Gronholm's crash Friday, which knocked the then world rally leader out of the Irish race. Loeb has 110 points to Gronholm's 104 with only the Nov. 30-Dec. 2 rally in Wales left.
"It was really great to win here, especially with Marcus scoring no points," Loeb said at the finish line. "I knew after the crash of Marcus, it all depended on me."
Last month, Loeb failed to take advantage at the Rally Japan, crashing out a day after Gronholm.
Loeb said he would drive more carefully at the Rally of Great Britain because all he needs to claim the championship is a top-four finish.
He said the world rally circuit's first race staged in Ireland was one of the most challenging in this year's 20-race competition.
"There are very narrow roads and tricky conditions - a lot of mud, some water," Loeb said.
Mikko Hirvonen of Finland, who finished fourth Sunday, is third in the overall standings with 89 points.
