I have a d15b thats been sitting in my garage that I got from some kid many years ago. He said his uncle got it and it was a JDM d15b. I was going to do the swap and he brings me a bare head and block (still attached). We ended up putting in a dohc ZC instead.

Question is how is it possible to tell which version engine it is. I cant find many people that know the answer. (Actually none thats why Im asking).
Are there certain serial number sequences?
Can I tell if I pull the valve cover?

Somebody help this things in my way and I would like to build it if its worth it.

 

it should have a stamp at the engine block that says b15b or ..and to tell if the engine is jdm or not.. for example.. b16a stamped on the block is jdm.if u see b16a2 or b16a3 it is usdm...with a number digit at the end is usdm engine.
to rebuild the engine or not. it depends on what do u want to do with it in the future..to boost it or just make it a reliable daily drive..

 

If it only says D15B it's a JDM 1.5 liter VTEC. If it says anything else after the B. It's USDM and non VTEC.

OBD1 or the less common OBD2 version?

 

yeah its definatly JDM. Only says d15b.
Oh and its also got the silver valve cover.
I just want to know if its the 130 version or not.

I might build it and put it into a track car.(not drag)

 

Both only say D15B as far as I know.

jdm 96+ civic also have d15b jdm vtec engine and if your d15b comes with original tranny..there should be a sticker or badge on the tranny with serial number that u can research and u will be able to tell which year it was manufactured.but u said it comes with a silver valve cover..as i remember ..it is 96 and up d15b obd2

 

Is the 96+ JDM still 130?

I know allot about this motor being i work with one.
It utilizes the P2J ecu which is very hard and rare to find.

Problem is no trans. I only got the long block stripped. not even a vtec solenoid.
Only reason I hold on to it is hope. Its got the silver valve cover with VTEC and its stamped d15b.

Is the engine different with the 3-stage VTEC or is it just different engagement points initialized by the ecu?

The 3 stage VTEC is weaker compared to the OBD1 version. 3 stage VTEC was invented strictly for fuel conservation. Does the head have 2 VTEC silenoids?

 

It doesn't have any solenoids. its a bare longblock. Is that the only way to tell?

 

A long block should still have the VTEC solenoids on it. They are bolted to the head.

 

Dude its completly bare. no sensors, no manifolds, no vtec solenoids, nothing.

What is 3stage vtec?
So will it not perform correctly if I use a pm6?

No way.......It's damn near imposible to get stage 3 VTEC to work properly. Even with a maped USDM ecu. You have to get the correct JDM ecu and they are rare as hell. Not even worth it.

 

So back to the original Q.
How can I tell which engine it is.
Theres got to be some way other than just the solenoids.
Im down to open the engine up. I just dont know what the difference is and no one seems to be able to tell me.
Is the rocker shaft different in some way? Different oil passages or solenoid location?

 

So basically nobody knows the difference between a d15b vtec and vtec-e?!

They are removable.

Im running one with a P2P ecu and No cel's, recently passing NJ state inspection without any trouble. Yes they are hard to find, but they exist.
