Default 89-91 DX OR SI Tranny which will yield better fuel mileage?

Am considering doing a dx to si tranny swap in my commuter for better mpg's. Did a search but no one mentions this, just that the si tranny is more fun to drive. I travel a lot with this car and want lower rpm at highway speed. Any suggestions?

if you want lower rpm's at highway speeds stick with the DX. I cant remember what my si trans did at highway speeds but my zc trans runs around 3500 at 70. I think that the DX trans is at 2500 at 60 or so.

Ah good to know I was going to do the swap. I think my trans is grinding but im not sure what a grinding noise sounds like. Its not that loud and it comes and goes. lifted front end into the air and spun wheel and heard a slight clicking. Is that grinding?

Probably the input shaft bearing.

Input shaft bearing is only $25 from the dealer. It will cost to get it installed if you cant do it yourself.

I will replace it this weekend, cheaper than doing the whole trans!

It depends. You can often get a whole DX transmission for free. I know I've given them away.

I sold my HF transmission to a guy who was going to change the Si 5th with the HF.

you can have the best of both worlds with the si trans.. you can buy an si trans and swap the hf 5th gearset into it, so that your 1-4 gears are unchanged and fun to use, and the 5th is the no frills economy cruising gear.

I have my trans set up right now with a 4.9 final drive with a .702 5th gear and i consistently get about 34 mpg highway, and i can still accelerate very quickly from first through 4th.

all depends on how fast you drive.

DX 4th = Si 5th, no gains at 45-50 mph.
