Oil in spark plug socket?
I have a 1996 accord lx non vtec.. here's what's up.. i was going to change my plugs so i pulled out the plug wires and there appears to be a lot of oil in the middle two cylinders and only trace amounts in the end cylinders. Is this normal???
I hope this makes sense to you guys. I'm a camaro z28 guy and i work on my ls1 all the time. this is beyond me so i logged in looking for help. thanks guys

thank you. will i need to remove the valve cover to replace the gaskets? also is it safe to drive in this condition? there is oil on top of the plugs which is probably not a good thing IMO..
thank you sir!
I have another car to drive but is the car "safe" to drive in this condition? I drive this car to and from work and school and leave my camaro in the garage. Need to know if I can drive it to work in the am. thanks again!

i will be changing it soon - like tomorrow soon - but definitely not tonight so that was my main concern. well i guess i'll take my chances tomorrow and see what happens.. fyi, i did take the plug wires out of the "cylinders" to let the oil drip off and settle in the cylinders so that when i put the wires back on, there wont be any oil in b/w the plug and the inside of the plug wire..
dont know if that makes a difference but what the hell

That exactly what you should do. I do that all the time because customers are too cheap to have it fixed. And yes it's safe to drive like that. How long have you been driving it?.. Exactly.. Worst case scenario, it'll cause a misfire.
Just remember to floor out all that oil after you pull it out of your garage because it might smoke a bit.

Ok.. installed the gaskets. simple. there were 4 o-rings that i can't figure out where they go... the kit contained the valve cover gasket, the 4 gaskets that go inside the valve cover, 4 grommets, and 4 o-rings.. where do the thin o-rings go!??!

Look in the Accord FAQ, those may be the lower seals that require you to lift the rocker assembly. I haven't done those seals myself yet. But since they're so hard to get to, just leave it as-is (do the valve and top-o-bore seals) and check your spark plug bores in a week or so. If there's oil in them again, then take the dive and pray to christ you don't mess up something in your valvetrain ;P
well it really depends on were the oil is on the sparkplug. If its on the end of the spark plug then its the rings on the piston. If its on the middle of the sparkplug then its the valve cover seal! good luck!!

That isn't necessarily true; well, I guess it is, but to be more specific, if the oil is only on the end of the spark plug and not actually on the threads or the insulator, then it is the rings.
You could have oil on the plug ends and still have the seals be bad - it's going to get down to the end of the spark plug by gravity and viscosity once enough builds up in the plug well.
Plus if his rings are bad, he'd be seeing some blue smoke too...

Since I bought my car in 2002 with 83k miles. I have had oil in my #2 spark plug. First, I changed the valve cover gasket and seals myself. didn't solve the problem. I had honda change it 2 times after that and it still isn't solved. There are some lower that it might be, but that requires major work. my car still get stock gas mileage and it runs good, so I just don't worry about it. I now have 160k miles and don't see any problems yet.
had this problem. i was doinga tune up so i fixed it. Just get a Valve cover gasket kit. In my car it was the lower seal in cylinder # 2 so we had to list the rocker arm assembly.
yea i have this same problem but ive had it for like last year i replaced the valve cover gasket in june whent away for a while cheked it like last month was back again said owell checked plugs yesterday and no oil it comes and go's i plan on replacing the gasket again in the summer if it dosent go away but i got no smoke coming out of the tailpipe so it cant be hurting any thing rite?? lol
i asked this same question and i didin't get a word fo reply, bummer. but to the OP there are lower seals and that might be the issue, well most likely is the issue. MY 94 coupe does the same thing and Yes you can drive it like that. What would be nice is if i could find a faq with pics on how to replace the lower seals as i hear they require more patience

totally off subject here for a sec..... honestly i initially thought i wouldn't get much good advice on this forum, for no particular reason, and i was dead wrong. I am a member of ls1tech and i post there all the time, trade parts, go 2 meets, and such. we get tons of help there and this forum seems to be equally good. I thank you guys a million for all the info. i'm kinda bummed to hear it's probably the lower seals but i'll check out the pics in the FAQ. thanks again!
