engine rebuilding, how long till its broke in
as the title states, im wondering how long its supposed to be before the rings are fully seated. i know it supposed to go through some oil. but is it supposed to actually smoke out of the exhaust? it seems to do it sometimes. so im wondering if the ring have just not fuly sealed yet. last time i had a problem putting the piston in and it actually broke the oil ring and scratched my cylinder wall. and it smoked like a chimney, all the time. like i said i didnt have a problem putting the pistons in this time so everything should be alright this time. my confidence level is on a low point right now. so im just hoping someone can tell me a few things that will boost it upa bit.
as of right now i just hit 600 miles on it. when i got everything together i took it out and ran it up to 55 mph 7 times and then have got on it a few times but nothing too hard. i took it on a trip that was around 200 miles or so and it ran perfect. it just recently started to smoke.
oh i should say that i had the block bored 20 over and installed 20 over srp 10:1 pistons.

dunno man. how often have you changed the oil since the rebuild?
I rebuilt mine about a year ago... Let it idle in the parking lot for 20 mins to warm up, then did a burnout leaving the parking lot.. beat on it hard every day since. worked for me =]
and yea, im sure a lot of people will come in and bitch at me. go read that writeup floating around about breaking in a motor hard. worked for him too..

i put new oil in it at first and then i changed it at 500 miles.
well i just pulled the head off and there are no scratches on the cylinder walls anywhere so i guess thats good. but there was some oil on top of the #3 piston. so im thinking that i might not have got the ring gaps offset like they are supposed to be. so im going to pull the pan off and take the piston out and investigate.
