I had a similar problem about 1 year ago..had a leak under the car. When steering it made an occasional noise (like while turing in a clover leaf off ramp). Had to have the pump replaced. Problem and leak fixed. Now about one year later the same is happening. The pump sounds fine. No noise at all. The houses that connect to the pump look dry. Alternator is wet. But very leaky underneath. Hard to determine where it is coming from. Pulleys and all very wet. How do I determine if the pump is bad? And what are symptoms of a leaky rack? Is a rack leak a big project? I think if its the pump I can replace that as it is very accessible. But the rack?
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated..thanks..

 

If the rack is actually involved on this.... it's a little difficult to work on it, not much space to fit your tools and stuff, but it's nothing impossible. I think the worst of all was disconnecting the steering at the firewall from inside the car (that's how i did mine), it was tricky to reach that bolt.
