i have a d16z6 motor that i got from a friend. he didnt know what year it was. how can i tell?

 

Look above the exhaust ports to the left side of the head. You should see a few numbers in circles with / marks. For a D16z6 you should see numbers like 9/1, 9/2, 9/3, and 9/4. It should be those at least because Im pretty sure the date stamped is always a year before the year the car was released. On my 95 B18b1 (LS motor) the head is stamped 9/4.
