Actually they are a really good all season tire but all season tires are not snow tires. If you live in an area with a lot of snow you should look into getting a winter set for the cold weather. An all season will have a tread design that will perform pretty well but the rubber compounds don't perform well @ under 32 degree weather. A true winter tire will have a rubber compound in it that stays soft under extreme cold weather and they will also be cut better.
They're inexpensive and they're okay, but not great. The very best all-season tires you can get IMHO are the Kumho ASX, Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position, Pirelli PZero Nero M+S, and Michelin Pilot Sport AS. In most sizes, the Kumho ASX is the least expensive of this group, so that is the one I usually recommend. If you need 14" sizes, the RE960AS has 'em, the others don't.
For even better performance, you can get a second set of wheels and put winter tires on them. That way, you can get the better performance of winter tires in winter, and of summer tires the rest of the year. But if you have to use the same tires all year round, all-seasons are the way to go.

Most of what you say is true. However, the statement about rubber compounds not performing well below freezing is generally true of summer tires, not of all-seasons.

I had the ability to drive the 512 and the 912 back to back, same wheel and car. The 512's had a defect in a couple of the tires which made them tough to balance. I was worried about the brand at this point, but they are getting to be older stock and might have dried or been squashed under stacks of tires. The 912 feel much smoother, and although I didnt get to really push the 512's I had the 912's out to a lapping day, and was suprised at how well they did. I ran them at 38 psi and had no sidewall issues. They are a much firmer construction than the 512's/ The grip was strong and predicatable, and they faired quite well with just a bit of feathering at the edges over the day. The do really get sticky when they heat up, but never felt greasy. They suffered from a bit of tread squirm, but theyre also full depth tires. They get the thumbs up from me.
