I have a loud cat back right now on my 00 SI (tanabe racing medallion) and I'm thinking of buying either an RSX type S muffler or the newer SI's(06,07) mufflers. Is there a way to tell whether they are the type S rather than the regular rsx muffler; and the SI rather than a regular civic muffler? Also any recommendation on either. Thanks

 

the regular rsx muffler has a silver (untreated metal) finish. the rsx-s is black in color.

i cant really help you out on the civic muffler, sorry.

just order a 06 si HFP axleback exhaust. like $250. your set

 

the rsx type s is black with a polished tip, i'd go with that too, plus it sounds nice

i was looking into it but i'm sure i'm going to have to modify it in order to fit a 00 SI and $250+ for an axleback that i'm still going to modify, i'd rather find an rsx or civic SI muffler ( and since i'll use the piping from my cat back which is 60 mm is still a descent system). I also read somewhere in here that the type R muffler has some sort of valve in in that at WOT make it flow better. Is it true? it also said that the 05, and newer rsx type s have a system "like" the type R.

 

you are correct. the stock muffler of the RSX-R has a valve that opens under WOT for better exhaust flow.

however, it is often mistaken that the '05-'06 has a similar system. IT DOES NOT. someone on clubrsx actually cut open their stock '06 muffler and discovered to their disappointment that there is no valve that opens under WOT. do a search on that site, theres pictures too.

if you're trying to find a rsx-r axleback, good luck. they're hard to find, i tried before, and if you are able to find one, they'll want more than its worth.

 

The Type-S has a bigger tip. I had a '02-04 style on my BB4, the 05-06 is a different style, and even bigger tip. All are 2.25" inlet. The New Si is oval tip, sounds like you knew this part already. Here's a pic of my old Prelude's RSX Type-S muffler...

Well, I could barely hear it when putting around, but when at WOT it was pretty badass, because you could barely hear it over the engine (JDM H22A). It was a perfect balance between exhaust noise and engine noise. I had a magnaflow cat, 2.25" piping, 18" resonator, and the 02-04 RSX Type-S muffler.

some had a butterfly valve in them i think it is the 05 type s rsx that would be tight also

 

I wouldn't doubt it if they did, those 05-06 mufflers were a huge step up in quality and finish. My 02-04 was just a straight-through perforated core type muffler, which is pretty awesome for a stock muffler. Props to Honda
