fans not working
i installed new radiator and fans on my 5th gen and plugged them in and let the car run and nothing. does the car not get hot enough just idleing? i dont want to go off driving and then the fans not work. i checked them for electricity and they said 0, but then i realized they might only have electricity when the thermometer sends the signal of it being too hot since there not wired direct. are they fine and will just turn on when driving and it gets too hot? can anyone help me out?
yea its acting normal, but normal when idleing is like at quarter almost at Cold. I use 10w-40 so it takes a little longer to warm up when i start it. thats for the help.
I've owned my Prelude for 6 years and the fan has never worked. I have tracked my car many times and never had the temp gauge move past operating temp.
Am I saying it's ok not having the fan turn on? No. I am just saying that you will be fine until you can figure out the problem, if you ever figure it out.
I would first find out if the fan works.

I have been having the same trouble with mine. My fans worked fine until I replaced my radiator. Now, neither fan works. Everything is plugged up correctly. I've even replaced the therm and the sensors.
When I turn the AC on... nothing.

I'd find out what voltage your fans run off (probably 12V, never looked into it personally) than jumper some wires from battery to your fan contact points and try to hot wire them. (disconnect your quick connectors, find out what wires are + and -, than jumper the according wires from battery to your fan. Your Ac condensor fan should come one when your ac is on. Your Radiator cooling fan should come one once when your car is up to normal opperating temperature. Than it will go off and only come on when your thermostat tells it to based on its predetermined on and off temperatures.
well.... here's the weird thing. if i run a jumper on the wiring harness to a 12v supply the fans come on.
i've already decided that i could run a switch inside the car if i have to but i really want things to work how they are supposed to.

Could be the relay than. You should jumper the coil on the relay and see if its just the coil thats not pulling in. The relay is easy to swap if thats the issue. If its a problem in the wiring, than thats going to take some time.
also fans will not turn off if you have no gas in the A/C system....
There is a pressure switch in there.
so basically turn on AC, do they come on ?
if not hook 12v to each fan do they work ?
if no check your AC is gassed up. If so then you have a faulty switch if not then regas and check again.
But there are some other parts to check if one comes up on the other, but it is a quick way to find out.

I read this thread and actually checked for myself aswell.
After about 45 minutes of driving around town, nothing too spirited neither fan is on in the engine bay when I checked at idle.
I tried turning on the AC just to see if the fans would kick in but they didn't, but i'm also pretty sure the AC hasn't been working for years (I never used it since I bought the car).
I've seen a reply saying that it can be fine, but do they only turn on when it really gets hot in there or should I be doing some of the things above?
It's a 1992 Honda Prelude Si.
Edit; I'm sure the fans in my 91 accord ex-r never came on either lol.

when i first got my motor running, i let it sit for 25 minutes and the fans never came on. I went for a 30 minute drive around town, came back home and let the engine idle in the driveway and waited for the fans to finally kick on, which they did.
go for a drive and keep an eye on the temp gauge. If its starts to rise, shut the engine down and let it cool down for a little bit. then drive it home.

Holy cow this site is buggy when you actually log on and try and post.

Like I said I drove for 45min, stop and go driving, came back to my driveway popped the hood and checked to see if either fan was on, neither came on even when I switched on the AC button though I believe that did nothing.
The temperature warms up fine to 2 bars and sits at operating temperature no problem I just recently had my thermostat replaced and flushed the coolant and replaced it but I doubt anything that would affect the fans.
But again does it have to be smoking hot outside or hot inside the engine bay for that fan to want or have to kick in? I opened the hood and didn't feel any heat, my hand was near the fans/radiator and it was really cool when I was opening it.
Might take it to a mechanic in town or drive to the big city and take it to honda and see if they can do anything.

This is probably the reason. I have all new ac equipment and haven't charged it yet.
I will see what happens this weekend when I charge the AC and let everyone know.
Thanks again.

I had the same problem. I just wired up the rad fan to come on when I turn the car on. So its always running while the car is on.
To do this is quiet easy.
Get a multimeter, prod your wires with the car on, and everytime you find a live wire, turn the car off and see if the wire goes dead. If it does than you can wire it up that way.
I happened to find an extra wire just laying around my engine bay that connected to nothing, but was live when the car was on.

I finally got around to charging the AC system. This was the problem. My fans immediately came on when I got some charge on the system. Thanks for the help!!

as soon as I starting charging with r134 both fans came on. After I got the system completely charged I turned the AC off and let the engine run and after about 10 mins the fans kicked back on. can't explain it but very happy that it fixed my problem.
