Default bit of sputtering

ok, I've got a bit of a sputtering problem...I don't know if it's the plugs, or if my AEM intake needs a new filter (well, I know I need a new filter, but the bypass should work fine if it can't suck through the main...some kind of oily gunk on it that I can't wash out...)

anywho, my mechanic said it's the busby, but everyone else I've talked to said that if the busby was bad it wouldn't run period...and this is just an occasional, moving-at-the-same-speed-for-extended-periods problem...it's almost like it's getting too much fuel and flooding, and misfiring...also, a buddy of mine said he had a similar problem with his 1st gen RX-7 he restored, and it was a ground strap...

I'm checking the plugs in the morning, but I just had a full distributor workup/checkup...at the time the plugs and wires were fine cause they were aftermarket...

if the plugs are fine, then what could it be? I just need a few places to look failing the previously mentioned ones, and i don't have the money to take it to a shop for them to do a tuneup for hours...
