I was cruising on the freeway, hadn't been boosting for a few days; all the sudden while cruising it sounded like I lost my turbo.... straight open-head sound...

I pull off the road after shutting the engine off immideately and find this:




Now: The manifolds work great, but the welds are something else. The material is holding up whee I welded it myself.. so I suggest to anyone that buys one of these to reweld the welds, or have them rewelded before using to provent such an occourance: but it is a disposable manifold at $100 or less... cheap as ****; but still expensive.

I am already saving for a nice manifold/DP, but for now I will just break out the welder.... as always, more TBA.

heh, the 2nd time it has, but I didn't reweld that weld so that explains why it happened.

Thing that sucks is I didn't get the extra exhaust leak sound with this one, it hppened suddenly.

The thing that saved my WG is the fact that I routed an extra long vaccum hose around the engine bay that came out from th radiator support (wired up to there) and the WH hung off the vac line 1.5" from the ground. That Vac line saved it, cause the vac line would have gotten chewed up by the power steering pulley.


It will take the welds and work again afterwards, that will ne yet another weld I won't have to stress over. A bog part of it is the fact I have no supporting dumptube on it. I am fabbing a dump pipe to go from the WG to the DP, that will add some support, but whatever...

Anyways, a few welds and it will be good as crap again. Atleast I will be able to keep the turbo on it and not swap in some headers.

 

Rewelding it does not solve the problem. It will continue to crack, i promise.

I still don't understand how guys still buy those crappy manifolds. Unfortunately this is why our sport is going to crap because of people wanting to make a quick buck by selling this crap and the people that buy it.

i bet u cash before the month is over there is a thread about these same manifolds. Someone asking if they are any good.

 

You wouldve been better off losing that wastegate. Go ahead and trash it.

So that's what we're calling them these days, "disposable" manifolds...lol.

It'll be especially expensive when some of those metal pieces, shards, and scraps have their way with your turbine wheel.

A guy near me has a brand new SC61, a paint job that must've costed 4000.00 and is runnin an ebay manifold. Manifold broke at the collector, bunch of **** hit the ground, turbo got damaged, parts flew all over the place, and scratched up the engine bay that was just smoothed and repainted. I bet he feels like it was worth it.

 

I second Tony1, rewelding wont solve the problem. The material is extremely dirty and even cleaning the hell outta it wont get it clean enough to weld correctly. Scrap and buy a real manifold. When will these people learn.........

don't be cheap and do some research before you get your setup together.

oah trust me, I know about the research, this is for fun.. the built motor is in progress, it will get a true setup.

I only drive the car 20-50 miles/day... enough to tune and get here and there...


Anyways, I got everything off in about 15 min, and welded it back up. I am pretty sure it will be good for a while longer, I just hd not been inspecting it alot recently.. maybe those few high rpm tuning sessions did the trick.. the vibration and all... but I added another 'support' to the WG flange... it is solid on there now.

ebay cast drag style manifold rock for 450hp or less setups they wont crack

but all the others sucks..

my buddys fabworks ramhorm mani's wg flange broke off just like that on the freeway.. just tigged it back on ..

Damn I'm lucky. I have one of those manifolds with 12,500 miles on it no problems quality control FTW

 

We keep an SS Auto exhaust manifold in our parts room just to show customers that ask us about them. The collector, welds and material are horrible
