Alright...yes...time to admit...I have an automatic in my ES1

...SoOoOo Ive been dreading posting this issue for a long time...obviously because I think Im going to get input back telling me "Hey, Buddy...you need a new transmission. Congrats!" And I dont like spending my money on anything that not an upgrade...but instead, a replacement.

Here is the issue: My car literally, when getting read to UPSHIFT ONLY, will rev to the point where the computer tells the car to upshift and the revs will stay up close the that range not for the say...quarter of a second it takes up upshift....but instead doubles the time, rev's high, and THEN shifts up into the next gear dropping the revs back down in the range.

The effect is almost like right before it upshifts everything goes into slow motion (lol) and then resumes to normality.

Now...Ive planned on changing the trans. fluid for quite a while now, and also the filter, if thats possible in DIY fashion. Could this work to solve the issue? (Theres always a possibility...how possible?


Also...Ive had this bad habit of actually SHIFTING through the gears and downshifting just like you would in a manual gearbox [since the loss of my 5 speed Mercedes 190E] minus the clutch. Heres an example: D3, lift off gas, 2, lift of gas, back to D3, Lift off, and D4 in an upshifting fashion.

Could this ^ either mess with the settings of the way the ECU has learned my driving technique and adjusts accordingly, causing this effect?...or has there a possiblity of my transmission being damaged? (Keeping in mind I never rev past Redline, never rev in Neutral and drop into drive to "Burn Out" or abuse the engine or tranny in any other way)

This effect also mostly only happens when the engine and tranny are COLD and hasnt been run in a few hours atleast (avg temp since effect has been occuring is 50 degrees F)

My 2 fixes to the issue I can think of to do on my own is the trans fluid and filter and unplugging my battery and depressing the brake pedal (to drain all power thru outlet of lighting brakes) for a good half hour to reset ECU.

Wondering if any of this will work? If anybody is a dorkus like me and shift an AUTO (freeking Loser I am) or if anybody gets what Im talking about...

well 7th gens are notorious for having bad auto trannies. there are a few people on the forums who have had their trannies crap out on them. the problem is you are shifting in the auto tranny(going from d3, to 2, back to d3 then d4), this messes up your transmission. you keep continuing to do that and you will break your auto tranny. if you want to shift, if anything you should only go down to d3 and back to d4

 

Sweet. thats all ive been doing lately...I figure upshifting through them and holding them in higher revs is ok for nice acceleration..its when downshifting 4th to 3rd...or perhaps Overdrive to 3rd is a good way to shed excess speed into corners without placing too much a load on the measly brakes we're equipped with.

Yeah im choosing not to run it as hardcore as i did. the fluid and filter as well and an ECU reset might kick things back into place.

Any other input still appreciated

Why the hell would you shift your auto trans manually???? To burn up a $1200 tranny only to save $20 brake pads??? dumb, try the flush and filter, hope your tranny is fine bro. let us know how it worked out, if not i know a few guys started a petition on here to honda for buildy crappy auto's, search for that.

 

The reason your tranmission is having problems is because of the way you've been treating/using it. Most likely changing the fluid will only make it at most a bit better but not by much.

Your problem here is when you down shift, you are pretty much forcing the transmission into a lower gear and as you probably notice, it will jerk because the revs go up. In a manual car, when you down shift, you rev match so you eliminate that jerkiness. It is called an Automatic Transmission for a reason... if you wanted to shift without a clutch, look into a car with "Tiptronic" or paddle shifters.

So pretty much, you've screwed your transmission and will need to replace it or have it rebuilt in order to remedy your problem.

FYI, you cannot change the filter. The transmision needs to be taken apart in order to replace it.

honda well known for bad auto...I did trans fluid change for my mom's 03 accord at 45K....my mother(over 55)who knows nothing about cars is feeling the difference....
