Default dirty fuel filter = bad MPG...why?

i know a dirty fuel filter will contribute to reduced MPG. what i cant understand is why. from my understanding, a dirty filter will restrict fuel flow. if anything, that will reduce the amount of gas the engine consumes, possibly making it run lean . obviously im not grasping this correctly, can someone break it down for me?

running lean doesnt improve gas milage, it makes it run less efficent however you spell that. you need just the right air/fuel ratio for the air and fuel to burn completely and efficiently. getting the best mpg not including other factors like tires, weight, etc.

You wont be running lean though. Your adaptive fueling will take care of that, ie your o2 sensor. You could loose fuel pressure, which would throw off your adaptives, but if they get too far out you will trip a cel.

alright...neither of those post really answered my questions directly.

thats a relative term, from the factory all cars are made to run slightly rich for a margin of safety, so leaning out your stock A/FR you will increase efficency, increasing both MPG and power. obviously there is a line where too lean will cause combustion chamber temps to sky rocket and threaten to blow everything up.

im sorry, im not quite understanding what your trying to say. seems like your just confirming what im thinking. with the readings the ecu gets from the MAP and 02 sensors it will lengthen or shorten the injectors duty cycle to keep the optimun AFR, so they shouldnt affect your MPG. as far as a clogged filter dropping fuel pressure, if i remember correctly, hondas fuel pump act as a on/off switch with a mechanical FPR controlling pressure in the fuel rail. if the fuel pressure is low wouldnt it just turn the fuel upmp on til its back up to spec? i still dont quite understand.

Yep, mpg will get better but will trigger a CEL.
O2 sensor will detect a lean mixture and and tell ECU to adjust injector pulse width.
But since filter is clogged, fuel flow is not enough to create spec fuel pressure and will still run lean.
Fuel pump is always ON with engine running. Excess flow is returned to tank via fuel pressure regulator in the fuel rail.
If filter is clogged, spec fuel pressure will not be reached, so there is no fuel returned to tank.

improper fuel pressure = bad atomization of fuel = crappy gas milage
